Right, I got a 360, not really playing it that much atm, good weather is stopping me staying inside! Too much sun, perfect sticky roads = fun riding :D

Anyways, yea, was thinking, I might treat my self to a PS3, couple of questions though...

1) PSN - Cost anything? How does it work? Any good?
2) .mkv HD film files, if I download (legally!) a 1080p .mkv file, will I be able to play this on the PS3 and if so, how?
3) Any decent games? Look at my xbl page to see the games I play :)
4) Is the 80GB version w/ little big planet and killzone 2 for £300 any good? :D
5) Any extra's that I NEED to buy to have a good time with the console?

Free, works pretty similar to xbox live in the sense that you just create an account and log in with it and it's unified across pretty much all online games. It's not as universal as xbox live in the sense that it often relies in a games party facilities etc but at the end of the day it works; you can play online. One thing worthy of note is that nearly all first party games have dedicated servers which is nice.

2) .mkv HD film files, if I download (legally!) a 1080p .mkv file, will I be able to play this on the PS3 and if so, how?

Yep but you'll need to remux them. A free programme called MKV2VOB will convert nearly all files in less than 5 mins, however if codecs are differing it can take up to an hour. If you don't mind doing it and have a good enough PC PS3MediaServer will convert files on the fly and stream them over the network obviously this requires your PC to be switched on at the time

Cba :p Look at the top 20 on Metacritic. I'd say it has enough of every genre to keep a gamer happy.

4) Is the 80GB version w/ little big planet and killzone 2 for £300 any good? :D

Yeah it's good atm, but wait until next week, a price drop is rumoured

5) Any extra's that I NEED to buy to have a good time with the console?

You'll need a headset if you want to voice chat, the official headset is approx £20 however the PS3 supports nearly all blutooth handsfree kits so if you already have one you should be fine. You'll need a HDMI cable too but that costs around £5. It supports Ethernet and wireless out of the box, has a hard drive built in and comes with one DS3 controller.

1) PSN is free. Works the same sorta way as XBL live (matchmaking in COD4 for example), however it has a PSN Store which you use to download demos, videos etc. Again just like XBL but more confined to one space unlike the dashboard. Opinions vary on how good it is, XBL is better for teaming up with friends, but they are very similar and PSN has improved a lot since release.

2) PS3 doesn't support mkv's, but a simple program like mkv2vob converts them to VOB's which the PS3 plays very well. Takes about 10 seconds to convert if no transcoding is needed.

3) Killzone 2, LBP, God of War 3 (Soonish), Motorstorm, Uncharted of the top of my head.

4) Decent enough price and it comes with two of the best games for it.

5) Hmm i guess the Blu-ray remote if you are going to watch a lot of blu-rays, but accessory wise, not really.

If you're not playing games because of the weather why get a PS3?

Wait a few months until you will be playing games again then buy one cheaper than today's prices.

I have both and picked up my PS3 when Killzone 2 came out. I don't want to start anything here but the 360 is, hands down, the better games console. Just take that into consideration.

PSN is a joke tbh. It's free, sure, but for a reason. PS3 Home can sometimes be a laugh though.

However, the PS3 is an excellent media player and the browser + wifi out of the box is awesome. I use mine mostly for watching youtube etc on my tv now. DVD playback is good too (upscaling really improves quality).

I would wait until after next week, if you wait till end of the month you may even get a PS3 slim.

1) PSN - Cost anything? How does it work? Any good?
As said its all free, the PSN store works in real money not some space bucks, there is a minimum transaction of £5 though but if something costs £6.49 thats all you need to pay. The only things that are missing from PSN IMO is cross game voice chat and an easy to use party feature. Some games launch via home has there own party launch that works pretty well but it is limited.

I use PS3media server to decode them on the fly its a great media server very easy to use and totally free

Plenty of games out you will enjoy has had the best (ratings) exclusive games out this year and Uncharted 2 looks to be a GOTY contender, also plenty of older exclusive games you can get pretty cheap now
4) Is the 80GB version w/ little big planet and killzone 2 for £300 any good?
Not bad but like i said wait a week or so for price drops and bundles

An HDMI lead, anyone will do less than £5 in many places now, a second controller (dual shock 3) official PS3 headset (15-20) other headsets will work be it Bluetooth or USB. No need for recharging packs or batteries as they use a USB lead to charge, for some a USB extension lead is useful to have if you sit a long way away from the console and want to play while the controller is charging.

PS3 slim will be a premium product, dunno why people are recommending it.

PS3 on its own will become 200 notes I reckon and new PS3 slim will be 250. (UK prices)

I think shops are getting rid of old stock, I doubt the slim and whichever PS3 "phat" is left on sale will be sub £200. At the moment a remarkably large amount of places seem to be getting rid of 40Gb and 80Gb units for £200 to £250 some with games.

Buy it when you want from somewhere you can return it if the new ones come out and are cheaper (again, I doubt after this announcement any of the 2 units will be below £199).

Over heard a PS rep in an online retailer saying the slim is due this year in Japan and will be bundled with Uncharted 2, so November? Probably BS and would mean a 2010 release for the UK probably.

OP I'd get one, I prefer using the PS3 but it's pretty subjective, there are a great deal of exclusives that you would miss being just on 360.

To be honest, I'd grab one of the current models if you can but for a £200-£250 price. No-one knows what the PS3 Slim is going to have taken away - it sure ain't going to have anything added.

-Wireless removed? Possibly.
-HDD no longer user-upgradeable? Possibly.

Nah only thing maybe an exteranl PSU, looks like it will have a 120GB HDD according to the leaked box and Wifi is still in, it wont be dropped as its a big part of the PSP/PS3 connectivity.

Could you please explain in what way psn is a joke ?

For anyone who has grown accustomed to Live or Steam, it is a very weak service in comparison. For example, no invite feature whatsoever. Massive limitation right there. Also, no ability to create private chat channels and play games at the same time (although, the new text-based chat is pretty nice). I really could go on but, sure, it's free and does get updated frequently. The real test for PSN is how it adapts and evolves in order to handle MAG near xmas.

Most games have the invite feature built in these days to be fair but yeah the 360 online side of things is more polished overall. I think the issue is that you stated that the 360 is just better in a very matter of fact sort of way when it is actually a subjective matter.

The in-game invites don't work unless other players are also in the same game. Useless basically.

Sometimes, the truth needs to be stated to people looking to dish out hundreds on something. I don't regret buying my PS3 but I sure as hell wouldn't recommend it to someone in the really enthusiastic way a lot of ppl tend to do in these threads. I like to just stress that, as a games console, it falls pretty short in comparison to the 360 imo.

TBH though the only thing that I use on 360 that PS3 doesn't have is cross-game chat. Even invites are fine as you'll recieve the message then you just load up the game yourself, hardly an issue. To me whilst actually gaming you really can't tell much difference between the two.

I know I keep spouting on about rumours but firmware 3.0 is supposed to have cross-game chat as one of the new additions. Should be out by the end of the year.

They do in many games, Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 are two that pop into mind.

Again, it isn't the truth, it's your opinion. Believe it or not those that are enthusiastic about it aren't being so to cheat him out of his hard earned cash in order to make more money for sony, we actually like the console. In fact i prefer it to my 360 as i think it has better games (or rather, games that appeal more to my tastes would probably be a better way of putting it), surely the most important thing about a games console is whether the games appeal to you.
