Had my ps3 a few months now.

Purchased 2nd hand from here and its been great,I use it as a media player from my pc and have it connected to my Samsung bluRay 5.1 system via optical, sounds great watching a film from my pc and can't really fault it.

Now here comes a strange problem,it won't output to my Samsung when playing games or watching a bluray,it will produce sound via hdmi but I want it to output in to my Samsung surround sound.

Any ideas would be great as it is bugging me now.

Tried changing the audio output settings/formats on the PS3? Could also be a setting on the surround sound, although the Samsung ones tend to be rather basic with nothing to really tweak or change so it's more likely a PS3 output issue.

Tried everything, the strange thing is this, when I'm in the ps3 menu and leave it on the game (without starting it) it will produce sound but once I'm in the game it won't.

is the surround sound set up to receive the correct input type??
have you ticked every setting on the ps3

I have tried everything as far as I'm aware, with a optical input I didn't think there was any setting as it is digital input or am I wrong ?

You can change the various audio formats the PS3 uses in the audio settings, it'll likely be one of those that's causing the problem because your surround sound system isn't fully compatible with all of them.

I don't understand your issue as I have my optical lead from my Flatty to my Surround Sound sytem & all the sound from anything that is plugged in just goes through it, PS3,DVD,Laptop etc
Explain it more & see if I can help/spot the difference that is bothering yours.

Just read through it again & I have my PS3 connected via HDMI lead & my Flatty connected via Optical cable to my surround sound system & anything played on the PS3 comes out the Surround sound.

I had this issue, it was certainly something caused by incorrect settings on the ps3, will have a look later and report back with what is working on mine.

Right, I have audio multi output on so I still get sound via HDMI if needed, in the audio output settings I have the following:

Page 1 - optical digital selected
Page 2 - Dolby digital 5.1 CH, ticked, DTS 5.1 ch. Ticked. Aac unticked, top linear pcm ticked but its greyed out, next two untucked, bottom linear pcm again ticked but greyed out.

I have the feeling that ticking aac was what caused my issues.

Hmmmm.... Will need to check that, however I am fairly positive I'm still getting 5.1. Mind you, I did have to perform a hard reset on the thing a few weeks back so I suppose it is possible it got reset and I've just not noticed.

Nope, sill got 5.1, it does quite clearly say under the setting that audio output to connectors that are not selected in audio output settings is downscaled to 2ch. But I have the optical selected so 5.1 works via that and HDMI will be getting downscaled, which is no issue as that's just connected to the tv's internal speakers.

Try resetting the display/sound settings manually hold down the power button for five seconds, it should let you change the display/sound settings might.
