Hey all,

My daughter is 7 next month and we are planning to get her a ps3 of her own as she has been using mine since I got a ps4 but its sounding like its near death and running very slow.

The only new option around at the moment is the super slim of which I would get her the 500gb version to make the most of the suitable Psn games I have had from PS+ over the years, she already has Disney infinity and completed Lego batman 2 a couple of weeks back so she's a keen gamer

My main question is; is it worth paying the new premium, currently a used boxed 500gb is £120 at game and £145 at cex, the best price I can find new is £199 for the ddestiny bundle, but as she doesn't want destiny it seems pointless other then trading it in for another game... The console alone is more expensive so of we were to go new I would be getting the destiny bundle.

Any idea if it's worth the gamble with a used super slim, they don't seem to have many reliability issues from looking around but for a difference of about £40 (taking i to account selling/trading destiny) is it worth the risk?

I'm sure she would prefer a red one too buy at £180 used I'll pass on that one

A normal slim will be fine tbh, you can get a used one for closer to £90 giving you more cash to spend on games.

I got a normal slim CECH2003a and it is great.

However, if the FAT PS3 is sounding loud, why don't you change the thermal paste, and pads? The Fatty's and a dying breed :(

Tried that with mine. Even bought some shims so I could use some nice thermal compound not the thick putty they came with.. Never worked after that and I have built probably a thousand pcs and stripped and rebuilt numerous consoles.

This late in the consoles life I'd go for a second hand slim from CeX or similar where you will get a 12 month warranty (around £100 for a slim). I see quite a few slims turning up in the members market here aswell - might be worth a look.

Slims are bulletproof (for me anyway). Not convinced by the SS I've read so many people having problems with them.

This definitely. A Slim is the way to go. you should be able to pickup a 320gb one for £100. That should be fine for plenty of games for your little un and as far as I can tell the most reliable out of the 3 consoles.
