Do you think that there will be a shortage of PS3 consoles throughout the UK and Europe when its released in 2 weeks?

Im not entirely sure as pre-orders for most places have not all been filled.

Will we see another 360/Wii shortage?

Well everywhere in town seems to have pre-orders left, i think people are being put off by the price tag.

Price tag didn't seem to affect the sales of the original Playstation though.

PS2 also.

The PS2 was £299 not £425, close to £500 once you get the HDMI cable, extra controller and game.

* GB£299 (November 24, 2000, Launch Price)
* GB£269 (June 2001)
* GB£199 (September 28, 2001)
* GB£169.99 (August 27, 2002)
* GB£139.99 (October 1, 2003)
* GB£104.99 (August 18, 2004)
* GB£94.99 (August 21, 2006)
* GB£69.99 (November 19, 2006)
* GB£50.00 (February 22, 2007)

I dont know...but what about taking inflation into consideration perhaps.

Do you think Sony will make any price drops soon after the release?

£425 is really steep!

They have said time and time again that there wont be any for now, i think the plan is to bring in a 20gig version as the cheaper alternative....possibly for when ms start cutting prices on the 360.

Yes ok so it wasn't exactly £425, but take in to account inflation over that past seven years and I think you'll find the PS3 is a reasonable price for what it is.

Inflation... Yeh thats a good excuse :p

No i wasnt giving an excuse, If by my thinking, one should allow inflation factors into those prices.....I wonder how many percentage we have gone up since then. :p (2000 prices)

True, considering its a blu-ray player as well as a kick ass console, with Wi Fi.

I think that the 220,000 (estimated) that are available to the UK will not be sold out on release date. However, I think after 2 or 3 weeks these will all be sold. The big question is when will any more be shipped? No-one has been able to confirm when they are expecting their second shipments from what I have read.

Bear in mind there were only 50,000 360's available in the UK on release date, and these did not actually sell out either, you were still able to pick them up, as expensive bundles in a a lot of shops. I think far too few shops are letting you but just the console on its own.

I could understand when there was a shortage of 360's shops wanted to maximise their profits by selling their limited hardware, with some software. But I don't see why they are doing this with ps3 which is not looking like it will sell out on release date.

I reckon either orders from Sony (unlikely as some places are selling without bundles) OR retailers getting greedy (something that wouldn't be that surprising ).

Well if inflation is such a key factor, why is the 360 no more expensive than the original xbox on release?

No...

Blaming it on inflation doesn't cut it, as prices of consoles have been pretty static.

Inflation is just a red herring tbh. Both consoles are sold at a loss. One console costs much more to manufacture than the other (due to more hardware in it).

In Japan they sold the PS3 at a bigger loss to get it into peoples homes, here Sony think consumers will pay a higher price, so it is sold at a higher price.

Surely its not much more complicated than that?

adjusting for inflation would add 50 quid onto the PS price though.

but thats not why its priced so high in the UK, its simply down to Sony Europe thinking thats what they can get away with charging..
