PS3 upscaled DVD

Not sure but apparently the PS3 scores 120/130, 360 20/130 on that benchie!

That's quite old too.

I wonder how it would score with a more modern firmware.
It's improved things by leaps and bounds.

Probably true of the 360 too?

It probably would've been fairer of them to test the 360 using its upscaler as well as just 480p over component. Same with PS3, I wonder how it would score with the >v2 firmware. Maybe the 3:2 detection is better.

After reading http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2088536,00.asp I take my comments back hehe, guess I should be better informed. Still DVD playback on the 360 is perfectly fine for me.

Well, that's the main thing at the end of the day, so long as you're happy!

I had personally read that after the upscaling update, 1.80 wasn't it? that the PS3 was about one of the best upscaling DVD players you could get.

Of course, there is so much bias, on both sides, posted sometimes, it's hard to be certain.

Like you though, I'm more than delighted with how normal DVDs look on my HDTV upscaled. I like on the PS3 how you can press pause, and switch between upscaled, and non-upscaled on the still image to really compare the difference, and it can be very noticable. I remember pausing once on a closeup of someones face. The upscaled image did show more detail, could see the pits in their face, compared to the non-upscaled image.

been watching 24 Season 1 upscaled on full settings, takes up the downstairs full 50" no bloomin black lines and looked a lot better aswell.

TY ps3 am loving it :)

iirc the first few episodes of season 1 were 4:3 and then it was 16:9 by disc 2.

The PS3 hasn't magiced away the black bars if that's what you were thinking. :p
And it's a bad thing if it did, you dont want a chubby Bauer running about trying to save the world. :D

Anyway, I must sleep...exam in the morning. :/

were on disk 5 and there has been no black bars on any of the episodes, and no one was chubby or warped.

it upscales it and the picture was very good quality. :)

I watched Hot Fuzz through an HDMI 360 yesterday and was rather pleased how good it looked. Running the same film back through component was noticably poorer and more grainy. So clearly the upscaling is pretty good as component 360 isnt upscaled, just std PAL 576i. With the TV scaling.

Xbox360 scaler > Samsung M86 scaler.

My old 360 was awful at upscaling DVD's, with some films it would only upscale to 576P, other's higher but it would judder. I had to use my dvd player for playback as it was that bad. This was early last year so I'm sure things are better now.

Where as the PS3 is so much better, I don't need the dvd player.

My father in law got a new upscaling dvd player connected through HDMI for christmas (free with his 42" Panny) which isn't bad, but when he was around over christmas he thought I had POTC:3 on blu-ray when watching it on the PS3, yet it's just the standard DVD :)

So then I put on Casino Royal on Blu-ray and his jaw dropped to the floor.

Yeah, I wonder if most people haven't been using the VGA or HDMI (I assume this works the same) to watch DVD's?
Using VGA connection for my 360 and I've been impressed with the quality. I do not have a PS3 to compare but I can't imagine there'd be much more quality to be had from a normal DVD.

I have a 360 and PS3. To me the PS3 does a better job but the 360 is no slouch and does a good job as well.
