ps3 users: multi channel sacd output now available using spdif!

This one wasnt in the features list thats for sure, but since version 2.0 the ps3 now outputs 5.1 DTS over spdif for SACDs. this is the first time a machine has been allowed an unencrypted digital output for sacds. Ive just tried it and i can confirm it does work. now theres no reason why any of you shouldnt own DSOTM on sacd :p

However, I was surprised to find that the PS3 now encodes the multi-channel source from an SACD into full-bitrate DTS and will happily output the results through optical. The sound quality is excellent to my ears.

I'm assuming this is something that has been added with the 2.0 firmware but it could have happened earlier as I haven't tried to play an SACD through optical since I got my PS3 in June.

Still, it's a decent addition as now I can listen to my small SACD collection again without having to wait until I invest in an HDMI amplifier.

So you just plug your PS3 into an amp with TOSlink and it works now? What's it mean by SPDIF? The PS3 doesn't have an SPDIF socket.
 
spdif = Sony Phillips Digital interconnect Format. spdif is the protocol used to trasport digital data over an optical (and digitial coax) connection. spdif isnt a type of connector, but the optical port does use the spdif protocol..


..so in short yes, that means you can do it using the TOSlink optical port:p plug that in to an av amp and you'll get 5.1DTS from sacds :)
