As you can see here at the top is the VGA to the monitor, VGA Female to Female, VGA to DVI, DVI to HDMI, and then HDMI out!

I know its rather long winded but I had the parts lying about pretty much so I got one from a retailer and thought, here we go!

But its not working
any ideas guys??
thanks

Nope, that will never work. The problem is that HDMI carries only a digital signal and VGA carries only an analogue signal. You can connect them like this because DVI can hold either (or both), but the cables don't magically do a conversion. Not sure if there's any other way to connect the PS3 to VGA.

That's not the issue afaik, thought your right, it'll never work.

The PS3s HDMI signal uses HDCP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP

Using a standard converter won't help unfortunantly.

It's rediculously expensive, but this will fix the problem (I've never come accross alternative products that do the same thing unfortunately). http://www.hdfury.com/

The other option would be to buy a a HDCP compliant DVI/HDMI monitor, or use another output on the PS3.
