Right, sure it's nice having a shiney PS3 along side the 360, having some of this gens best games to play yada yada.

However, I gave up a very well respected and rated blu ray player in hope I would get that back plus a console.

However, sound issues... It seems, after reading a few posts on the net that when outputting through optical on the PS3, it efectivly 'ruins' the sound.

I agree, the bass is way over the top and the mid range is all but good. Now, I have heard cries in the answers for users to switch to HDMI audio output. Now the only option for me here is to then split my HDMI cable using a splitter which will then give my AV a HDMI audio input from the PS3 and still leave my TV with a HDMI cable...

PLEASE, for the love of god, someone simplify what on earth this so called 'blu ray player' wants from me so I can enjoy my much loved blu rays again lol.

The only reason I am now sticking with it is because the other half loves her new toy, the mega SEGA ultimate collection game she picked up for pennies...

If I get rid of the PS3 now and buy another blu ray player, I am sure I will lose my testicles or worse...

Does your amplifier not have a HDMI passthorugh?

also what set-up do you have as iirc HDMI supports 7.1 whereas TOSLINK only supports 5.1

amp only allows HDMI audio, no video passthrough :( was the ONLY downside in all reviews sadly.

I have a 5.1 setup...

Id get a new amp that supports dd/dts decoding so you dont need to worry about the console converting the content to lpcm.

Have you tried altering the settings?

The PS3 provides options for either "Bitstream" or "Linear PCM" when outputing the audio signal. This option is located in the "Settings->BD/DVD Settings->BD/DVD Audio Output Format(HDMI)" and "Settings->BD/DVD Settings->BD Audio Output Format (Optical)" settings of your XMB

Dunno if it'll help :(

Oh and the PS3 Slim isn't shiney hehe :p

Im slightly confused here, you sold youre old BD player and bought a PS3 but now you want to sell it because the their is to much bass and the sound quality isnt as good as your old machine when watching BDs?
Surely all those problems can be resolved by setting up yor amp for the PS3? I use optical on mine through an old amp (no HDMI) and it sounds pretty good I cant understand your problem TBH.
On the plus side your old BD player wont do half the things a PS3 can do, so do you want a PS3 with its amazing games and features but has a sound problem that sounds like you can sort it out yourself or do you just want to watch your BDs?

Understandable confusion. At first, loved the exclusives, but just not feeling them really... The quality from playback from the PS3 is mediocre at best, so yes, I miss watching my BR's in the optimal quality :)

I won't be losing out on anything really, infact, might even make a profit from this 2 week experiment :)

As for the sound issues. Some people live with it, some people notice it, I unfortunatly am one of those sad people that will notice it and it will drive me insane. I have tried everything to sort, but it's just the icing on the cake to me.

It is a fantastic system, don't get me wrong. Some amazing exclusive titles. However, the only game that really kept me stuck in was Demon Souls... Which the new Dark Souls is coming out on multi platform. So won't be missing that on the 360.

OK so if in 2 weeks you have played all the PS3 exclusives and your audiophile ears cant put up with the sub par PS3 with your amp, then i guess you have 2 options get rid or buy a new amp. Sometimes things just dont work out as planned i guess.

Im curious what your actual issue is - can you provide links to the issue and details on your amp - lots of people use the optical to their amps, so it surprising to hear of this deficiency (unless youve overblown it with your point of having to get rid of the PS3 to cure it).

I have my PS3 connected the same way and as far as I can tell I dont have any sound issues, buts its something I might have missed, though Im not one to believe that some people have specially trained hearing...

ps3ud0
