Done it a few times for various people, most of the time its a temp solution but one or two are still going. Ive had a play around at work with more "pro" methods one involving me profiling it and running through the reflow oven and others using an infra red rework station, they both are working fine.
Im pretty sure i put my YLOD guide up in here somewhere, just dont rush it, be careful and make sure the heatgun is not set to a to high temp and flow. A useful tip is to get some kitchen paper and adjust the height on the heat gun so it slightly browns the paper as you move it along, this will be around the correct distance you need to be from the main board.

Hey there, I've done it a few times also. :) Works a treat, All the machines I reflowed have been running flawlessly ever since. I think 1 ps3 is coming upto a year since I did it.

Wouldn't it be better to fork out a bit of cash and get a Slim as a replacement through Sony? Or is this one of those backward compatible ones?

:oIts one of the backward compatable ones, with extra usb etc before they made em all cheap and nasty if it fails ive just lost the cost of the supplies and i'll sell in the digital heat gun

Did mine on monday, it worked fine that night, so I ordered an external HDD to back it up, and it died on tuesday JUST before I backed up my FF13 save to memory stick.

I think it was the thermal paste I did wrong though, I used up some left over Noctua NT-H1, but it just didn't go on right and I didn't have any left.

Looks like I'm buying a slim. :p

Edit: Although thinking about it, it did die on tuesday just a couple of mins after starting it up. If it had been a paste problem, it would have died on monday when it was running for longer, surely?

I've done a few, in my experience it's a 50/50 if it lasts. Some are still going, some crapped out a week later.

As soon as the Slim was released I traded my 60gb for one. From what I hear the 60gbs are dropping like flies so I traded it before mine died. I just paid an extra £50 and got a new PS3 and 12 months warranty. It seemed better than paying Sony to fix my 60gb. I can bet they would have charged more than £50 and no 12 months warranty either.

I'd likely break my PS3 if I took it apart.

So are Sony not offering a 3 year extended warranty for this problem like MS did for the RROD then?
