I have an original 60GB ps3 which recently got the YLOD. After watching some youtube videos I thought I'd try the hairdryer fix in order to (1) remove the disc and (2) backup data.

Well it worked, and the COD3 disc is out. However, when I try and backup using my 16GB usb stick (formatted fat32) it is saying there is not enough space. How much space to you need to backup???

If I were you, I'd back up all your savegames to the USB stick and sync your trophies before trying to back everything else up. Your savegames are the most important thing, everything else can be re-downloaded.

Thats all I want to do, backup all save games and sync trophies. How do I backup just the save games?

@ whitecrook. Why would I want to backup downloaded games, can't you just log in to your account on a new PS3 and re-download those?

Just go into Games > PS3 savegames from the XMB, and then from there you can open up the actual files and I think you click 'Triangle' then select copy. One of my main gripes about the PS3 is that you can't copy all of them across in one go, you have to do each individual file separately.

That should explain it far better than I can. :)

Think I've got it. Went to savedata utility and copied the data to the memory card.

edit: Cheers Malevolence.

I don't think this fix will last more then a day!

yeah. my friend has dones this a couple times and he backed up everything but only some stuff went back on he had to download all the stuff again, dlc , demos etc. So next time he deleted everything, and then done a backup. much faster. then it took about a week to re download it all.

Adz, remember you need to deactivate the console in the account management menu. Will you be buying another ps3?

when my 40gb died - i did the hairdryer trick - borrowed my bros ps3 and did a direct ps3-ps3 transfer (cant remember the actual name of this process) so that it transferred everything.

Then took the 40gb to the high street and traded it in for a new ps3 slim - job done. It even stood the play test in the shop. saved me a lot of cash. Brought the new slim back and performed the same backup/transfer process to the new slim.

I was gutted because I removed the warranty sticker and was getting ready to take it apart because a disc was stuck inside, I've removed a disc before for my cousin when his PS3 died. I looked on youtube AFTER and found the hairdryer fix, and I didn't actually need to open up the system at all in the end. My brother boxed it all up and took it to town yesterday where they tested it and it was working fine, and they wanted £70 to part ex it for a 320GB slim which he was gonna do until they realised the warranty sticker wasn't there so they couldn't swap it. Now I guess I can either take it all apart and sell it as parts or just as a YLOD repair job. If I hadn't removed that warranty sticker I'd have a slim now lol.

I took mine apart and gave the processors the heatgun treatment and put it all back together. I used the hairdryer to keep the warranty sticker intact! Then gave it the hairdryer through the back vents - which sorted it out in the end (better than the heatgun btw).

My warranty sticker only had a slight mark on it so they thought it was ok - phew! think i got like £120 for mine

And mubarak on the new arrival just saw the good news in the SF thread!

Khair Mubarak bro.

Result! I stuck the warranty sticker back on and took it into town today. They tested it again and yet again it passed all the tests, they offered me £127 store credit or £102 cash, I took the cash. They are really not bothered at all as long as it passes their tests, they said even if it dies the very next day it is their worry not mine. They will now be selling that for £170 with a 1 yr warranty. I could have paid £51 on top and taken a 120GB slim model but I'd rather buy new tbh...
