After over five years, my 80GB fat ps3 has finally died. I've got a few questions:

If I buy a 12GB slim, can I fit my current ps3's hard drive into it? Will all the data transfer across?

If I buy a new hard drive, how do I transfer data between the two? Ideally, I want to spend as little as possible to get a new machine...what's the best forward?

Thanks!

No, you can't fit the hard drive from your dead PS3 into a new PS3 and have everything carry across as it will ask to format it before it can be used (it's likely to be part of the encryption used).

If you get a new hard drive for the new console (along with the caddy as the 12GB models don't include it), you'll have to coax your now dead PS3 (there are a few ways to breathe life back into a YLODed PS3) back to life just long enough to transfer the data between the two consoles (this requires a LAN cable to be connected between the two consoles).

Fair enough, shame but thanks. To be honest, I don't think I'd lose much - I'm not midway through anything at the moment so I may just get a 12gb and let it format the drive.

if you have a usb drive, try doing as demonix mentioned get a bit of life backinto it and copy your games saves onto a USB drive then sync your account to the psn servers.
