Just a quick question

Which has the best picture quality for playing blu ray films

Playstation 4 or a high end blu ray player ?

I cannot tell the difference between my Playstation 4 and my Sony BDP-S7200

You won't, its outputting the same digital picture via an HDMI cable a £40 blu ray player will have the same unprocessed, 1080p hdmi picture output as a high end player.

That said some advantages of a Blu Ray player over a PS4 will be it will be quieter - No fan noised have a regular Remote control.

I don't think that is 100% correct.

There has been reviews that the blu ray player in the ps4 is crap and in fact the ps3 is the better blu ray player. I've not looked into this but it's what has been claimed when I was looking into the ps4.

So I think a standalone £40 player will be better than a ps4. But if you have a ps4 it would be a waste to spend £40 as the difference won't be huge.

Whether or not anyone can see the difference is yet another thing.

Also the ps4 has a lot of fiddly settings when it comes to blu rays. It actually takes quite a bit of time to get it outputting right for your screen. Colours and blacks may be off otherwise. Super white output, deep colour, etc.

When the PS4 first came out it didn’t have Blu Ray support at all, an update enabled this but a further update was required before 3D was enabled.

It doesn’t have an option for a remote control like the PS3 and the batteries in the controllers don’t last ‘that’ long.

Its ‘audio preferences’ menu is labyrinthine although ‘bit streaming’ is possible its just not called that.

Its upscaling and de interlacing abilities are not great if you wanted to watch DVD’s or something like a rare 1080i blu ray disc.

Combined with the fact that its loud make people not love it as a Blu Ray player.

However sat next to a high end blu ray player that wasn’t upscaling to 4k or applying any sort of Darbee processing both players would output the same picture fed the same 1080p 24p Blu-ray disc.

Unlike the PS3 I believe it can output Atmos metadata at the same time as a 3D signal.

I think the same advice applies for anyone who asked the question with a PS3. If you already have a PS4 then it would be daft to buy a standalone player. The same applies in that it would be daft to get a PS4 just for bluray. If you're going to play on the PS4 then IMO it does a decent job but if you have high end AV gear then a standalone player may be worth investing in.

Although it may also be worth waiting a couple of months to see what happens with the new ps4.5 or ps4k, as may turn out to be a good option for 4k blurays.

Whats wrong with it? Just anout to buy one and plan on ditching my old blu ray player.

If you don't have a ps3 already i'd stick with that . If you have a budget blu ray player and your gaming on the ps4 then go ps4 . I don't use my ps4 for film watching anyway .... Got an Arcam for that :)

The ps4 v a ps3 as a media centre is a no contest ... ps3 wins hands down

My main bug-bear is that I own digital films on my ps3 that are physically on my hard-drive . I don't need to be online to play them . The ps4 only streams them , and if my internet / ps network is down I can't access them

Nothing really, it'll play stuff via USB or a NAS, it'll play Blu-rays and it's got most of the popular streaming/on-demand apps.

Fat32 only. :/

Why did Sony ditch the manufacturing of the remote to some 3rd party for the PS4? Plus I've read their remotes aren't as good as the PS3 remotes from Sony themselves...

Can't you transfer the movies you payed for from your PS3 hard-drive to the PS4 hard-drive ?
Or is it possible to download them again from PSN onto your PS4 ?
