I wonder what the longer term consequences of this will be. Obviously devs will be more likely to use the PS4 as the lead platform. In terms of optimisation I can see how that may work in PS4's favour as perhaps less time/budget will be spent on other platforms trying to get the best from them.

Obviously MS know this and seem to be fighting back.. and they have the cash reserves to do it, unlike Sony. (link). I guess this a good way to shift the reported 900k of unsold boxes that were left on retail shelves after Christmas.

Whilst there are lead platforms, they won't really get in the way of optimisation as long as the developers don't purposefully choose to not optimise due to laziness.

But people have the wrong idea when it comes to games, and think it's developed for one platform and then sloppily converted for another, this is not the case.

Games are developed on PCs, and then compiled to run on their respective dev kit machines.

Seems a non-story considering its from a single UK online retailer (is it even classed a retailer as opposed to a marketplace now anyway?), especially in light of stories that COD/BF4 still sold better on the XO in the US last year IIRC...

USA is Xbox territory though.

I imagine that cod and bf4 sold better on ps3 in Japan like 10:1 because that is mainly Sony territory.

Would like to see full figures from all territories rather than picking a territory a particular console is extremely dominant usually

I think my point was thats a far more pertinant figure than what Play.com sold - especially as thats the reason for the existence of this thread

1. Football Manager 2014 (PC Game)

The king is obviously still on top, but this alone shows that stats from 1 UK retailer are flawed. If the stats are true, then all I can say is I'm happy I got the PS4. Even if it is selling it 2:1, that is still a very large chunk of XO gamers.

The figure looks suspect to me. They say 4.2m PS4 games sold. Perhaps that figure was confused by the number of consoles sold. As PS4 mainly sold in bundle deals, that figure looks unlikely.

Not sure what your point is  - those figures dont align with what Play.com found as per your OP. I dont think theres any real value making conclusions on such limited data...

From what I can tell it looks like around 2:1 global, and probably 3:1 Europe. US is likely much closer 1:1.

Youve lost me - looking at your link, globally its:

Code:
Global Software by Platform
Platform Yearly (change) Total

PS4 727,465 (-92%) 10,117,698
XOne 519,281 (-93%) 8,288,472

I dont see how that supports your 2:1, nor adds credence to your OP - I swear Ive missed something...

Strangely FIFA 14 wasnt in the top 5 Xbox One selling games....yeah strange indeed, considering it was bundled with probaby 60% of Xbox Ones

So id answer "what does that mean to gaming" as not a lot...

Nah, I just didn't look all the way down the list :o. XB1 doesn't get on the board until position 20, and it has quite a few titles way down the list that I didn't take into account.

Even if these interesting figures are totally accurate (ie not spun by unseen factors like bundling) they prove nothing apart from the fact MS are being successful in their XBO marketing. It's being pitched as an entertainment device rather than a gaming platform, so early adopters -- usually hardcore gamers, you'd presume -- will have had a natural bias towards the 'better' gaming platform and hardware even without the pro-gaming culture at Sony.

It's still very early to draw any long term conclusions, and I say that as someone who settled on a PS4 as soon as I played Last of Us, Journey & Uncharted2. In fact somewhat gloomy initial stats like this may help make the XBO a more attractive package later, as MS wake up, smell the daisies, and start to fight back.

Although MS had a good financial quarter, thanks in part to new hardware, I watch a lot of CNBC (US business channel) and the level of debate on there proves to me that most analysts must be Apple users, because they show little real understanding of MS from a consumer's point of view.

Urgh there is tonne of us who always buy digital and preordered the console when microsoft announced 100% digital ownership. Hence I buy loads of x1 games but none from shops./

Wow...no thread can exist about these consoles without handbags flying...nothing is safe, and now people can even predict the future regarding sales figures
I thought these boards were better than that but I feel this one is going to degenerate into another fanboy carry on
The Tomb Raider for example (I'm gonna stop now...) :D

It's not hard to make an educated guess that the more powerful and cheaper console with the more gaming history should be more successful in the long run now is it?

Companies have failed in the past for not being innovative enough, or taking too long to produce hardware or not being cheap and powerful enough.

I just don't see how in the long run xbox1 can keep up those sales, only the hardcore and those with money to burn will be buying it in the initial couple of years. Once people start reading all these reviews stating games run at higher res or higher fps or better graphics on the ps4. Then it will sway people even more.

Tbh it's mainly America Sony need to convince and that will have a huge knock on effect onto Europe and games developers.

If Sony can get a lot of Americans to switch over that's the hard part done.

I'm glad that Sony has made this strong comeback they have struggled with the ps3 compared to previous consoles, the lack of ram mainly and I'm glad they learned from those mistakes and listened to developer feedback.

MS on the other hand have shot themselves in the foot, they are now going to have to run this race on one leg and hope that they don't lose too much ground to Sony before it's over. Hopefully in 4-8 years time they learn from this and make a strong console next time round focusing on power.
