PS4 in 18 months time ?????

lol at this thread, ps4! sure elite is the xbox 720 by that reckoning. Who the hell is continuing to post fantastical rumours ( that scream bs straight away ) on this forum. This place is bad enough without it becoming the inquirers' echo, repeating the bs they spew.

Yeah MS have nothing to do with forcing dev's to charge for DLC do they? Epic came out and said ever since they released GoW that they wanted to charge OTT for Map Packs.

At the moment the PS Store is great value, nice clean interface, and uses cash money. They keep it like that, it'll be a massive sucess and show XBLM up for the overprice heap it is.

Microsoft are the publisher of Gears of War as Ubisoft are the publisher of GRAW. MS chose to charge for the downloadable content for the game they payed Epic to make for them. The position is whether MS are forcing 3rd party publishers to charge certain prices or not and I seriously doubt this. I mean EA makes it's own rules and I wouldn't be surprised if MS were internally a bit annoyed at EA charging for cheat codes etc. They're all playing the market at the moment and seeing what they can get away with. Heck, I'm not a big fan of capitalism per se and sure I think gamer pictures, wallpapers and most the downloadable content is a waste of space and overpriced (horse armor anyone!) but I can't see anyone forcing people to buy stuff and yet people do seem to be.

be funny if true, then watch all those who slated MS for the Elite slither out the door :D

I dont understand the hate for the elite.
Its simple heres a 120GB drive (which you can also buy seperate) so if you like black and fancy HDMI output were giving you it.

Start downloading HD movies (approx 6GB each) and you soon will run out of room particulary if you keep all the demos, music video plus using your own entertainment on the drive.

Sorry do you care to have a look on PSN and come back and tell us all how much free stuff their is at the moment. Let me make it simple for you dont count the TV trailers, or the approx 5 movie trailers, im happy for you to concentrate on full demos or trial games like marketplace is full of. Their is currently 66 demos on UK Live and 68 on USA Live, thats not counting the trial games available on "Arcade Titles".

Overpriced you say, i take it youve compared prices of Sonys online content to Microsofts, please share an example of that with us too.

I downloaded "Blood Diamond" (one of many films on USA Marketplace) this week in 720p with 5.1 which cost me approx £3 and stays on the hard-drive for 14 days. Thats good value and an example of what will eventually come to UK Live this winter.

I can see the benifit of money being money over MS points but considering how many free demos appear on Live or other free content i really think you need to reconsider your statement of pricing and value.

Found this info on IGN about this rumor,
US, May 4, 2007 - More breaking rumors out of Australia! Technology website, Smarthouse, is reporting that a new PlayStation console could be coming much sooner than anyone had assumed. This new console might be hitting the market in less than 18 months, if the website is to be believed. The article in question refers to the device as the PlayStation 4, although it would purportedly still use the PS3 chipset, making it more of a PS3.5 than anything else. Apparently, the console would become a home entertainment centre in itself. It would include software for managing the signals being input to your television. This device would hopefully eliminate the need for an extensive home media center.

According to the article's sources, Sony was "look[ing] at a Sony home server based on Playstation technology. This would allow consumers to connect home automation devices to the Sony server while also delivering online gaming and access to an extensive movie and music library." It sounds like Sony intends for this product to be some sort of Tivo replacement more than a competitor with Microsoft and Nintendo's game consoles.

This whole rumor reminds us far too much of the PSX which attempted the same sort of gaming console + media center approach, but garnered limited sales. Sony declined to comment, so this story will remain a rumor until someone decides to officially announce anything.

Well it won't be called PLAYSTATION 4 at least. The number 4 is unlucky in Japan (I think it's associated with death?) so they will probably give it a name like PS3X and then go straight to PS5!

But I don't believe it anyway.

That is China. The Chinese word for four sounds very similar to their word for death hence the association

Though as said previously, the main reason why this won't be called PS4 is because it is not a new console just an adapted version of an existing one like the Elite or the Wii DVD or that awful looking Panasonic GC that could play DVDs that was released in Japan. I would't be surprised if it was true though, it will only increase sales and Sony, like every company in the world, will take all the sales they can get.

Full games at 3.50 is great value. 800 'points' for 4 maps that should be free is not great value, especially when you can't buy 800 points, you need to buy 1000 points

You seem to forget that Microsoft has spent millions publishing, localizing & advertising Gears of War at their own expense so isnt it natural that they want to see as much return as possible? Although I do think they are a tad overpriced and I would consider 600 points more fair, but hey thats just me.

Most of the stuff on the PSN wont remain free for long since the sums dont add up. It will eventually get to the point where they can no longer afford to keep it all free, unless they make some kind of deal with in-game advertisers or something along those lines.

Look at it this way you pay nothing for it yet they cannot run it for free so where is the money coming from? You could say from the downloadable games, but wont most of the profits go to the developers/publishers? Sorry I've never touched a PS3 so I'm having a hard time thinking where the funding for all this is coming from and I do not think Sony will run this service at a huge cost to themselves for very long.

Have you already forgotten about Home /Little Big Planet?

This will reap huge dividends from advertising as it has been proven there is huge amounts of people wanting to chat and interact online, design avatars and just live virtually. Not to mention the fully downloadable movies available soon

( I would however prefer to be able to download them permanently for a larger fee, or at least be given the choice as opposed to £3 for two weeks)

I am a firm believer in addons being free (maps, weapons, vehicles etc) after all we have paid £30 - £50 for a game, even if it has trailers for devs new games whilest loading next level or whatever built in. Then the cost of developing the addons (which isnt going to be that much at any rate) can be put into marketing budget legitimately.

Yes I've heard of them, but I have no idea what they're all about or what they involve since I'm not interested in them one bit :). I just see them as gimmicks because all I care about are the games (of which Im seeing very little of)

The only game thats caught my eye so far is Ninja Gaiden Sigma which is just a remade Xbox game so its not worth me forking out £425+games, accessories for something Ive played to death already.

And the above is why I understand very little about how the PS3+PSN works, to put it simply I just dont take an interest because it offers me stuff I dont need and nothing I dont already have.
