PS4 new HDD

My son is playing all sorts on the PS4 now and we keep having to delete things so could do with a bit more space. Will the below HDD be fine to use?

My basket at Overclockers UK:

1 x Seagate 1TB Barracuda 5400RPM 2.5" Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LM048)= £37.99

Total: £41.47 (includes shipping: £3.48)

Looked at the possibilty of an SSD but its about double the cost and probably worth keeping the cash for a new PS5.

Yeah, there's nowt wrong with that. You could get an external USB one as well which would mean you could still use the HDD you already have.

If you just want the extra storage then an external drive is the easier option.

I thought the max was 1TB? Will happily pick up a 2TB if it will work as the games are indeed getting huge!

I use a 4GB external drive. Seems to work fine plus it makes games easily transferable between consoles. The drive can also be formatted and used for other things if needed.

WD My Passport Portable Hard Drive - 4 TB, Black - this is the one I use. I have one for my pro and another for the 1x. About £90 each.

The PS4 supports a maximum of 16TB (8TB Internally, 8TB Extrernally). You won't find any HDD or SSHD greater than 2TB that can fit physically, drive needs to be less than 9.5mm deep.
4TB SSD's have been tested and work fine, usually cost prohibitive.

I went for this and it works great. There is a noticeable difference in loading times. Especially when playing MP games as a lot of the time I load in well before my friends do. You can get it cheaper elsewhere.

Will a seagate expansion plus 2-4tb be ok. They are around £60-90 depending on capacity. Been looking at getting more storage for a while now.

Also do you think the extra external storage will go with the ps5 when it arrives? Very tempted with a 4tb if so.

Modern warfare is almost at 200gb and still growing monthly!!

Are you on a pro or ps4? I know the drive in ps4 was relatively easy to get to and replace. Not sure about the Pro? Only had mine a short while and dont really need to change the internal drive but it is one thing I miss about PC gaming - SSD load times.

its not one I play regularly but sometimes if I’ve got half an hour I think I’ll put it on and there is always an update to download first which takes 16 hours!! Should really keep it in rest mode!
