so i am getting an SSHD for my ps4 as i am sick of the noise coming from mine which i assume is the optical drive.

so i want to know will my save files work if i download a game instead of using the disk i was originally using? i know ill have to buy it but i dont care about that.

Save files across physical and digital games is a bit random as some will work but others seem to require a new save file to be used.

I'd check it out on a game by game basis, some will be fine but others not plus games.drom other regions won't work either.

im pretty sure its the blu ray drive making the noise. anyway ive bought the sshd now and will be doing it tmoz or next day. im in 2 minds whether to start the game im playing again so thats a plus i suppose. made too many irreversible mistakes lol.

now reading this im more hopeful its the blu ray drive than sure lol.

I'm confused, why would changing the hard drive to an SSHD affect the noise that your Blu-ray drive is making?

That aside, the BD drive shouldn't be used other than when installing games or when initially recognising the disc anyway, so I'm with the others and I think it's more likely that you're hearing fan noise.

Just be careful with GOTY titles. I got stung by witcher 3 GOTY which is classed as a different product to standard witcher 3 so none of my saves worked.

because i would be installing the game onto the SSHD removing the need for the drive to run at all. the upgrade isnt just for the noise i beleived to be coming from the blu ray drive but for the loading times. dragon age inquisition is the game i am talking about, ive already bought the exact same version and it was only 9.49.

EDIT - for the whole time i have used consoles when playing games the bluray or dvd drive would always speed up all the time. not just at start of the game and tbh to me that doesnt make sense at all. why would they make you continue to need the disk?

The PS4 doesn't access the disc other than when you initially start the game to verify you actually own it. If it's still doing so long afterwards, it means it's still installing data.

Maybe it's the hdd spinning up? It doesn't sound like the fan to me but I could be wrong.

Will report back tomorrow after a few hours of play with the new sshd.

I've not had much time to play the game as for some reason it was downloading at less than 1Mbps even though the connection test says I could achieve 7Mbps. So it took 16+ hours.

There was still some noise. Not as much as before but they could be down to not playing for long it could also be down to the SSHD not working as hard to load the data.

Seems to have halved loading times. Which gave me a big smile. Just means I have to pause now to go and make a drink.

Did you get a Firecuda? I'm toying with getting the 2TB but am a bit nervous about whether all my game saves are synced to cloud or not and can't find out how to tell.

Yes I did. There is an option in the settings, saved data, you can tell it to save data to cloud or USB etc. And you can look to see what data you have saved their. It's pretty simplest once you look at it. Cloud saves are only available if you use playstation plus or whatever it's called but you can have a 2 day or week can't remember trial that has 10gb of storage available.

It's easier on ps4 than it is on PC. You can back up using USB stick and save all your data on your PC or laptop if you plan on using the USB stick to install the ps4 software I think you need it to have only the ps4 software on it.

if you go to the settings menu then Application Saved Data Managment, then Saved Data in online storage then download to system storage (dont worry it wont download all the files) you cansee all the ps4 saves that are saved on psplus.

When i upgraded my HDD just to make sure, i went into the same menu but saved data in system storage then selected them all to upload to online, then also to be sure put them onto my usb mem stick.

Cheers buddy. I'll have a go this weekend. I'd like to back up the games too but don't have a spare external drive that I can reformat so it'll be a case of leaving updates to download overnight I think. Sony can't hold a candle to Steam for download speeds.

If you have an external case for a 2.5" drive (even just your backup usb drive for the pc etc). put the new drive in that case, connect to the ps4 and do the backup system from the settings menu. once done you will have a hdd with folder called PS4 copy that folder onto your PC, put the PS4 drive you are replacing into the usb case format it to exfat copy the PS4 folder onto it connect to the ps4 then from settings do restore from backup.

I was going to do the backup game saves and do fresh install. Put PSN so slow it was quicker to do the backup onto drives option.

Or manually upload each save to PSN+ and check the date/times? If it is there it'll ask if you want to overwrite.
