PS4 to PS5 data transfer question

Hi All,

Right now I have both a PS4 and PS5 set up under our main telly, but this feels a bit redundant. I am thinking of buying a large USB SSD (something like the Crucial X8), plugging that into the PS5, and using it to store and play all PS4 games. Any downsides to this plan?

If this is workable, what's the best way of transferring all the data over from my PS4 - not just game data, but save files, screenshots etc. as well. Is this possible? I also don't want to wipe the data from the PS4, as it will just be relocated into a bedroom or something.

Cheers,

Su

You can’t copy the games to usb but you can move them. Copy from ps4 to usb and then plug it into the ps5. You’ll need to use the same psn account if digital.

Saves are best done using ps+
Ps4 can copy saves to usb but I’m not sure if ps5 can take them from usb… I’m pretty sure ps5 can only transfer from/to cloud.

I think I'd rather spend slightly more on an M.2 SSD for the PS5 and use that instead.

You can transfer data from the PS4 to PS5 via the network:

This should leave your PS4 data intact too (whereas transferring games to an external drive won't), but you may want to confirm that.

It is dead easy to transfer saves and games from ps4 to ps5 over a network, there are several guides on youtube. I used this one but there are a load of them to search for. I did mine before I set up an external drive, so I copied everything to the PS5 ssd first, them moved everything to the external drive afterwards, but I would imagine you can do it direct to the external drive in the first place. I don't think you have to move everything in a oner either, so you can do it in batches if you like, if it turns out you can't go straight to the external drive and you have too much data on your ps4 to do it in one to the PS5 ssd.

Super helpful, thanks mate! I will give this a go with the external and report back if any speed bumps!

My plan was to use a USB SSD for the PS4 games (since they can be played directly from the external drive), and then add an internal NVME drive for PS5 games only, since the fast storage is more of a premium and the PS5 games are getting pretty huuuuge! Any problems you see with the plan?

That'll work, but I think as time goes on you'll find yourself gradually having fewer PS4 games and wanting additional storage for PS5 titles. I've got a 1TB NVMe drive installed and between that and the on-board storage, it's plenty of space for a vast array of PS4 and PS5 games. If you've already got the external SSD then it makes sense to use it but I wouldn't suggest buying one specifically now.

I am slumming it with a mechanical 2TB drive in my external caddy for the PS5 and it is fine for reading PS4 games. In fact it is the 2TB drive I previously upgraded my PS4 with taken out of the PS4 and the original 500mb put back in, since the PS4 is totally redundant now. It powers down when the PS5 is switched off OK. I think having an external drive connected to the PS5 is still useful as you can store PS5 games on it when you need to, but maybe don't need to get an expensive large external SSD when a mechanical will do, and put the money saved towards another M.2 for the PS5.

why involve the LAN if you want them on USB? PS4 networking is shabby at best

if you want them on both consoles you would better off just downloading them to the PS5 from PSN, or installing from discs if you have them
