Hi guys.

Hopefully you friendly folk can help out.

My girlfriend wants me to help buy a 2nd hand PS5 for her son. I can obviously find a bunch through the various places like here/ebay/FB but is there anything I need to look out for specifically?

Things likely to go wrong with them etc?

Above all, I think it's important that you see it in action on site. It's not just about going there, but starting a game, putting a disc in the drive, testing the controller and listening to the fan. Moreover, for me, used consoles that have been tinkered with and missing original invoices are classics. It's better to pay 20 pounds more than to have trouble later.

I’d look out for the picture I’ve attached if you buy from a less reputable place like Gumtree etc.

There are a number of banned online PS5’s that people are trying to sell to unsuspecting people.

I’d personally buy from members market or avforums where there’s less chance of an established member trying to offload a banned console.

The older PS5 model has a stand that requires a screw to fasten it in place - it's not uncommon for people to lose that screw. There are 3rd party alternatives available. I think my biggest concern would be stick drift or a sticky bumper on the controller.

I got a 2nd hand one from cex and they included a 5 year warranty and were fine showing me it working, they also had a load of cheap games (again would swap or show working)

Edited to say I haven't made use of the warranty but it looks comprehensive.

It's important to know that outside of 6 months, the refund if not able to source a replacement will be at current sale price, which could be well lower in 2/3 years. Not a deal breaker, it's just a bit of a departure from what most consider normal warranty terms. CEX is always good and they give 2 years warranty.

5 years, and with some sort of funky conditions. Now I think about it they're not that weird but worth bearing in mind.

The MM is usually spot on for that sort of thing, there's a few PS5's went on there for reasonable prices tbh.

I sold one on there myself a couple of years back and it was barely two months old, only really bought it to play FF7 Rebirth at launch.
