What do we think this is then?

Redeemable code for online play perhaps. Need access to the store to input the code is my best guess. I'm pretty sure it won't be an introduction of a paid-for service as that already exists with Playstation Plus which is only just a year old. I doubt they'd make such drastic changes and a big U-turn on the promises of the Playstation Network remaining free.

Hasn't there been recent rumors of a complete PSN revamp?

The only thing I've read is an alteration to the layout of the store. A black background to allow more colour for the content, a weekly special offer segment and a search function similar to Google where it brings up suggestions as you're typing.

This is quite simple for me. If the game has Trophies that are on-line and it's got one of these single use passes in it then I have two options:

1) Don't buy the game.

2) Purchase at a much later date and buy a cheapo code off the internet.

Either way, I have so many old games to play that i'm playing catch up for the last year or so. Doesn't bother me one bit but this is starting to become a nasty habit.

Sounds more like a pass to play the games like EA has and not a pass to play online with any game.

No way they would put a price on PSN now. It would be suicide after the hacking.

Here's the news article from eurogamer's front page:

It's probably a onetime use code to access online multiplayer, that will be free in the box with all new games, but if you buy it secondhand you will have to buy the "PSN Pass" for that game from the PS Store.

I'm thinking / hoping a PSN Pass will be free or heavily discounted for Plus members.

I'm not that fussed tbh. If there's a game that I particularly want to play multiplayer, like Killzone, BF or CoD, I buy it new on day one or week one anyway.

So it's more to cut down on second hand consoles than games?
It's to 'cut down' on second hand games, not consoles.

Actually, it's just to try and make some money out of second hand games. Currently the publishers / devs dont see a penny out second hand game sales, they want to incentivise people to buy the game new, or at least make some money if the game is brought second hand.

It's part of the Resistance 3 branding just like the bit about PS Move support, not the console branding. It'll just be an online pass like FIFA has to cut down on second hand games.

The Move symbol is on the standalone console boxes though so I'm not sure it's that.

I really don't think they'd put a pass system such as EA's on the box.

Ah, I read it as being a one-time use code that allows access to online gaming on PSN. Like... the month free XBL Gold you get with 360s, but forever. :p

Im told by my mate who's down in London for the F1 2011 press event, that its just a Sony rebranding of the current 'pass to play online / access features' thats in place on certain titles already.

To help cut down on second hand sales, pretty much all new titles are going to adopt it (Same with the 360), it seems.
