Well just read Engadget and there is news of a forthcoming 'premium' PSN subscription. What this unlocks is still unknown. What do guys think about it? Have Sony missed the boat and should've charges from the outset or do you see this as backtracking from their original business model?

Either way it will be interesting to see fanboys from either fiercely defending and opposing the idea. (though there is no suggestion that this will be mandatory)

I can already see the "Told you so" posts coming :)

Its not for online gaming, its for other services that are not currently available, so PSN as it is will remain free. There was a link a while back for PSP game rentals, this could be a monthly or yearly sub, also things like a monthly fee for watching movies or some other as yet unkown services.

As long as it doesn't affect the gaming side of things i couldn't care less. Some people want to pay for early exclusives to betas, demos, developer videos and all that jazz so fair enough if they restrict the charges to that sort of thing.

That all sounds good to me. Hope it doesn't affect gaming in any way.

as above

I'm pretty sure it's for premium services (beta access, new videos, early access) etc so It shouldn't really affect the gaming side of things.

this imo is how XBLG should be.

Online gaming with psn will remain free and that's all that matters to me and im guessing a high percentage of other ps3 users. I can't see a large percentage paying extra for a subscription just for a few beta releases, surely sony will have something up their sleeve to attract more to this 'premium' service. As to what that is we'll have to wait and see.

There's no way they could charge for the actual online gaming bit until they are feature complete with Xbox Live.

"Sony's Kaz Hirai confirms 'premium level' subscription coming to PSN"

Engadget said:
Well, Sony may have once downplayed the notion of "catching up" with Xbox Live, but it looks like it is now set to take at least one big cue from its rival. As oh-so-quietly revealed during a presentation on Thursday and now confirmed by Kaz Hirai himself, Sony will be adding a "premium level" subscription service to the PlayStation Network sometime next year. According to Hirai, that subscription will get you "premium content and services," although exactly what those are remains a bit unclear, as the current level of service will apparently remain free, and continue to include features like Facebook, Netflix, and the ability to play games online. Also up in the air is any word on a price or launch date, although the timing of the announcement does seem to suggest that we might just be hearing more about this at CES.

I wouldn't mind paying a sub if it ment I could watch so many rental movies a month for no extra charge. A bit like a lot of DVD rental companies are doing.

Ah yes. I bet that will be an option. Pay a monthly fee and you can have unlimited access to PSN and PSP Games on the store.

Think I read ago they were thinking about putting in a rental service for the PSP, whether this is it or not I don't know. probably something similar.

I'd pay for something like this. Like all of those DVDs by post companies, but unlimited streaming/downloads. I don't think there is much of a story here though, they are clearly just tapping into the large free community of users and saying there is more stuff here if you pay, not taking away what is free now.

I'm wondering if they might be bringing the Sky Player to PS3, there was that leaked memo from Sky that said it was on the cards.
I'd be elated if that were the case, it's annoying having to switch on my PC whenever I want to watch the footy!

I'm all for it and for them trying to make more money, as long as the non-premium service is exactly what the current PSN is like and that the PSN premier will just be that + more stuff.

If this is true then it looks very interesting. The 1 hour trials for full PS3 games and free access to PS1 games sounds good.

A survey sent from IPSOS Online Research indicates that Sony is considering premium subscription plans for the PlayStation Network, detailing potential prices and premium services, including full hour game trials, free access to PSOne Classics, and cross-game voice chat.

If I had to subscribe to one (and ideally I DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR ANYTHING!! and want all of the above to be free :)) option 1 looks the best as it gives a 3 year warranty, and Beta Access. The rest of the stuff offered in the package could be good, but it is far too open to interpretation as to what they are. The 2 I have mentioned are self explanatory.

I still don't understand this voice chat larkey. Isn't it going to break some past titles if it's implemented?
