PSP Memory Card - What to go for?

I honestly couldn't tell you if one was faster then the other but i doubt there's much it in if at all. What i will say though is that i have a 2gig sandisk pro duo and it's perfectly fine, games load much faster off of it than they do off a UMD (and batterly life is very much extended too)

Oh, there's something called magic gate that you need to make sure they have apparently. I think all decent manufacturers include it tho (it will say if it has it on the front of the data stick in the bottom right corner)

Was thinking of the SanDisk 8GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. Is the following faster:

Sony 8GB Pro Duo Memory Stick (Mark 2)?

I have that 8gb Mark 2, and it loads games ridiculously fast.
Great!

Saying that, I'm in the market for a new one now, and will be looking at 16gb cards.

Vin.

Go SanDisk.

I've had Sony ones from completely reliable retailers that were fake unfortunately. :( Apparently the situation with fake Sony sticks is very dire indeed.

Got a couple of 4GB Sandisk ones, and an 8GB one (as well as couple of "fake" sony ones). All work fine. :)

I got mine from a very well known online retailer. Seems legit to me, all works well, using the M33-6 speed hack it goes even faster than before... I couldn't install Resistance Retribution fast enough.... I played it once from the UMD, and then put it on the memory stick, sadly, at the expense of two other games, because it was a full 1.6gb disk. so that's why I wanted a bigger stick. How can you tell if the Sony sticks are fake then? Mine is MagicGate Supported... or are the fake ones too?

If I got a fake one from a legit retailer, I'd send it back, and get a replacement. I have to say though, the Sony one I have here is faster than my sandisk one, but the sandisk one is older, and smaller, which may be why.

Vin.

EDIT: Blimey, just going back through my old orders, I paid £50 for that 8gb Sony Mark 2 about a year ago lol
Lots cheaper now. I was looking on the same store for 16gb sticks. I can only see Sony ones listed. From £71.49 to "new and used" £53, though I'd consider those ones more likely to be fake?

EDIT2: OK, one of the reviews stated
BEWARE the market is flooded with fakes.
The way to tell is the writing on the back of the card should be engraved into the plastic, run your finger over the back, if its smooth its genuine, if you can feel a slight raise then its painted on and fake.
My camcorder just kept saying memory may not be able to record images all the time, very annoying.
THIS ONE IS REAL....AT LAST!!

I just took mine out of the PSP and it feels smooth, so I guess it's OK.
I may see if I can get a 16gb stick from the same source. Or, is it just 8gb sticks that are mainly faked? are 16gb still new enough to be mostly genuine?

EDIT3: and by the way, where I mention above that the Sony stick I have is faster than the Sandisk, that shouldn't be taken as a reason to go for the Sony.... I mean, they're both very fast. The Sony one clinches it, but, it's not necessarily worth spending extra money on. Games still load very fast from both, and make you never want to load from UMD again!

I guess if you wanted to be 100% certain about getting a genuine one, you could visit somewhere like

https://shop.sonystyle-europe.com/SonyStyle/Memory-Storage/Memory-Stick-PRO-Duo

but the 8gb stick is £10 more than the rainforest store, and the 16gb stick is an eyewatering £100!!

I think I'll hold off for a while, and just make do.
I do fancy a 16gb stick though, so I can fit as many of my UMD images on one stick as possible.

I got mine from the rainforest and they're definitely fakes. :(

The problem is that the market is absolutely saturated with them, and it's really hard to tell until you've got them out the packed and checked if they support magic gate. They work fine, they're just not as fast and a bit poorer build quality.

I've only used mine as Magic Memory Sticks, so it was never worth sending them back.

I like the Sandisks as well, as you can get them in a few colours, much easier to tell all mine apart. :)

I've got a Photofast 5400 arriving and will eventually get 2 x 16Gb MicroSD = 32Gb. Much cheaper than what a 32Gb Memory Stick Duo would cost :)

get an M2 card (cheaper, £23 for 8 gig or 40 for 16 gig) and get an adapter. Normally the adapter come free with the m2 card. It did for me anyway. Got mine through a mobile memory shop online. They are real cards too not fakes.

Keep away from market place type deals as usually they are fake.

Watch out for some of the M2 cards as i think Sandisk are no longer supplying the Duo Pro adaptors with them now. The last lot I brought didnt come with any.

So how do you tell?

I got mine from there. The writing is smooth, it supports MagicGate, and is faster than my SanDisk one.

I was sure it was legit. I bought it 12 months ago or so, maybe the fakes weren't so widespread then?

Vin.

As far as I know, it's not 100% that, it's just a good indication. There's all kinds of stuff about the thickness of plastics used and rubbish.

Generally if it's got MagicGate, it's real. Without, it's most likely fake.

Have some screenshots from my PSP guide.

wow I didn't know you could stick games on the MEM cards.

Time to buy an 8 gig.

/goes to look at how to load from images.

That will be great it's the main reason I don't play games on my PSP.

Well, you need to installed a special non-standard firmware to do it.

Alternatively, the PSN store is getting more and more games that can be downloaded directly to, and played from the memory stick.

The new Resistance Retribution is one of them! :)
