Okay I'm looking into getting a lil console, primarily to use the brain training functions (worried I'm losing my noodle!), a quick bit of research shows the PSP has an equivalent to the advertised DS' Brain Training game called Hot Brain (or Mind Quiz).. are these similar?

Also, it seems the PSP has a far greater range of titles that aren't the usual "Mario.." carp which I don't like - true? Not a huge gamer, more a RPG person..

Can either/both play mp3/video files and if so how do you get them onto the system?

Peripherals, I'd be looking at headphones mainly - can you use generic headphones or are you tied into certain overpriced hardware for each platform?

Thanks for your time, just looking to not make the wrong decision :)

Mind quiz is also on DS and considered a poor knock off of the original Brain training. Currently if you are into mind/puzzle games I think the DS is a better platform with Meteos, Puzzle League, Tetris, Pictocross and more to choose from. The DS is also very strong for RPGs with new dragon quest games on the way and of course the Fire emblem and final fantasy series on the system.

The PSP is getting better software lately but the majority of what is about atm is stuff you can buy on bigger consoles. As a result of this my launch day PSP sees little to no action at all. Like I said though it is getting better and there are also RPGs/final fantasy games coming to the PSP.

PSP does have better media functionality and will play mp3's and videos right out of the box, with a nice big memory card you could fill it up over USB to your pc. You just need to make sure they are properly encoded for the system before transfer. The DS will do media stuff if you have the correct flash cards/software for it, but this is an extra purchase and the screen is not as good for video playback.

Headphones are the same old jack as normal ones.

I bought a PSP with a lot of games! Enjoying it, bought it purely for my holidays, you can buy an extended battery/hdd jobby for it which I'll put things on as 2gb doesn't hold enough.
Going to use it as a MP3 player too, the GF has a DS so can use that for an alternative.

The controls are awkward but I'll probably get used to them!

I have both, the DS is better at what it's designed for, i.e playing DS games using the abilities of the touchscreen. The PSP I mostly use for things it wasn't designed, using custom firmwares. I won't go further than that on here, but I certainly wouldn't keep my PSP without it, as I hardly play any actual PSP games on it.

Thanks for the replies so far guys :)

To be honest I will be looking at using *whichever choice* as a multimedia device, not just games so mp3/movie handling plays a big part.

I don't own a console at home so I am not worried about all the PSP titles being PS2 re-hashes.

Do either have wifi or the capability to add it in?

Both have WiFi.

To be honest if your looking for a media player / portable game console go with the PSP. If you just want to play Brain Training and want the extended battery life go with a DS :)

I got bored of my PSP and sold it as all the games seem to be a poor mans PS2 port with poor controls.

If you like RPGs get the DS and all the DS/GBA RPGs.

If you don't want a games console but want great movie playback, web browser etc then get *** PSP.

if you are going to get a psp i would wait for the new version which is reported to be released in europe early september. Here is a picture of them together:

Once this is released i would expect the original PSP to be quite cheap to get hold of, especially 2nd hand. Either way it seems silly to pay full price for the original PSP just at the moment.
