A friend of mine is going to build a new system..He hasn't quite decided on all the parts yet but is going for the following..

Intel Pentium 4 950 3.4 Dual Core 775
PCI Express motherboard
1Gig DDR2
He won't be overclocking or going sli or anything like that.

What he needs to know is with PCI-Express does he need to use an ATX 2 PSU or can he get away with using an ATX from his old system which is a cheapo i think?

around 400W and don't go cheap. check the power connectors on the mobo, gfx, SATA drives etc and see if you have the correct ones to power what you need.

Yes you will need ATX 2.0 and above to have PCI-E 12V connector. As said don't go cheap with PSU as a good one will stay with you for a long time and can be used in future upgrades too.

That Pentium D is based on Netburst so it's going to be power consuming, thus you need a PSU with a healthy 12V rail.

I think he only has a 350w, so looks like he may as well invest in a new ATX 2 PSU.

Now all i need is suggestions for him for as cheap as possible or alternative Case with PSU included? He has not gave me a budget for this be i knwo he won't want to spend a lot.

i have the same question, im upgrading to an athlon 64 3200+ and hopefully a 7600GT card, im running a Enermax Coolergiant 330watt with seperate 12v GFX card feed, am i going to survive on this with a conversion adaptor, or is it new PSU time?
