Will a decent brand 500w psu run a i5 750 @4Ghz, gtx 470, 1hdd and cd rom??

It would, but you have probably around 50 - 80w spare when at full load.

I would look at a 620w PSU ~

Looking powe usage the card pulls around 405w, but I am not sure on the full specs of the system.

Ideally upgrade to a slightly higher gpu with give more room to play with.

It's probably best to just spend an extra 60-70 bucks and just buy a new PSU with a higher power rating.
