PSU Advice

Hi all,

New build time and I am out of touch with a lot of things as its been 6 years since my last build.

Rough spec is 3930SB-E, 16/32GB RAM, using old GTX260 while waiting to see how Kepler turns out, x79 Sabertooth mobo and then some SSD storage and standard HDD.

I would like to get a fully modular PSU which will suit my needs, be reliable and efficient and have the scope for some expansion in the future.

I would be really grateful of any advice you guys can give. If it matters, I am looking at an Antec P280 case.
 
 
I don't know if I will ever endup running SLI/CrossFire so I'm not too concerned about supporting that.

I would more likely have a single powerful GPU.

While I can't say money is no object I would rather pay for a quality unit which I know will do the job and last. In terms of 'warranty support' are some supplies better than others these days?

When Kepler comes along I will probably (assuming its as good as they say) look to get a higher end card. Maybe not the very top dog but certainly that side of things.
 
I would prefer to keep under £150 however if the justification is sufficient I would stretch further.

Again I would much prefer it to be fully modular for obvious reasons.

Obvious reasons? A modular PSU will usually come with cables attached that you have to use anyway?

If you wanted semi-modular, that XFX Lemin linked to is really great for the price.

I appreciate there are some cables which you will have to plug in, I just prefer to (where possible) have the bare minimum required plugged in.

As I say I am open to advice and opinions, I always find it best to get a varied selection of feedback when trying to make a decision.
 
Looks like the XFX 850 is in the running then.

In terms of warranty and support how good are XFX?

If anyone has any other suggestions to add to the pot or wants to \,,/ the XFX let me know :)

I had to use XFX for my GPU when this failed rather than a PSU and it took them roughly 4 weeks to get me a refund via Ocuk.

Just read my reply does seem a bit cryptic :p

I needed to use the XFX warranty when my Graphics card failed (4870x2) after 6 months, I send the card to Ocuk and then they passed it onto XFX, as they could not supply a new card I got a refund and this took around 4 weeks to get a reply back from XFX.

I am not sure how good they are on warranty repairs / replacement parts.

I think my working life is bleeding over into home (nothing like a 4 hour turn around on parts...).

I have the work mindset of long term support and warranty :)

That is one of the things that has me looking at a PSU manufacturer I am more familiar with or who I at least know has been doing this longer. I could be ignorant of XFX foray into the PSU world however...

The best RMA I had was Enermax, I pretty much got a replacement next day after receiving my old one.

4hr turn around is pretty good, ours you end up giving up!

Most of our stuff is 4 hours which is awesome, blade chassis PSU goes off another one is with you in no time. To be fair with what we are doing it has to be that way.

I do place a lot of value on good support, nothing like knowing your safe should something go wrong.
