PSU and power up

Hi all

I built a PC successfully, installed xp etc. Then took it to my IT guy at work and 20 minutes later had it all apart because he didnt like the look of the cable management. He never put it back together.

Ive just put it back together and tried to power up....no response from PSU.

My first diagnostic - the PSU?

My question: Should the PSU work/run if i plug it into the wall power and NOT have it connected to my pc components? As it stands, there is no power when plugging into the wall - no fan run, no noise, nothing.

This is a brand new, used once Corsair 600x builders series.

Many thanks!

The PSU will only run when asked to start, either through the power on button on the case (pc built) or linking pins 13 & 14 on the main ATX connector (not counting the extra 4 pins) with just a fan connected to one of the molex connections.

....urgh ok....ill give it another bash. thanks! (watch this space!!)

One question...you say 13 and 14 but my motherboard wants the power switch in pins 6 and 8. that normal?

RJC is talking about shorting the 24 pin power connector on the PSU so you can start it without it being connected to the motherboard.

It's got nothing to do with connecting the power switch to the motherboard.

and just to be sure because its still not powering up..a stupid question follows...

do the pins have to be a certain way around (ie the label on the pin (eg PWR) facing inwards of the motherboard or all facing in the same direction)?

Note i am pitting the pin with the arrow as the positive...

It doesn't matter which way round they go for the power and reset switches as long as they're connected to the correct pins on the motherboard.

The power and drive activity LED connectors need to connected correctly for positive and negative.

if i may..
my front panel (silverstone case) has a black wire with a usb then at the end of that has a 4 pin with the label

GND
D+
D-
VCC

but my motherboard doest seem to be able to accommodate this. what are these pins for? (ive tried to chase them but they are behind a plate that is very difficult to remove..

If it was me i would be having words with your IT guy as i wouldnt be able to have someones pc and take it apart and then not put it back together again

Case is the GD01 SMXR. the info that came with it is very poor and no online support that is adequate enough!

Is that a HTPC case?

If so it's a USB header for the LCD/IR module.

The 4 pin needs to be plugged into a USB header on the motherboard (the correct way) and the USB connector is for plugging into a USB socket on the rear of the motherboard.

From the manual I've no idea if you need to connect both or just one. Probably just one.

The 4 pin cable goes into a USB header on the motherboard or the USB connector goes into a socket on the rear of the motherboard.

Check your manual to see if you can use the red coloured USB header.

all the manual refers to not doing is using the 1394 in the UISB 2/1 header. so ive put this into the USB3 header.

all my USB 2/1 headers are all being used. I cannot use the USB 3 header as the pins are slightly smaller and the USB 2/1 pins wont fit into it.
