Hi. I am building a quad-core system with five 74GB raptor hard drives and another eight 7200.11 Seagate drives.

Would a 580w PSU be ok to power the above or do I need something else?

Many thanks

firstly what model is the PSU because that will determine the answer

if you mean a no name psu that cost almost nothing then it may do but i wouldnt trust it even if it did. however, if you mean one from a manufacturer that are know for good PSUs then i dont thing it should be in issue.

post the name and model PSU you are planning to use to give us a more clear indication

also post the rest of the spec, especially the CPU, graphics card(s) and any other power hungury device you may be using

The machine will be used as a server to run a number of virtual machines. The motherboard is an Intel DG33TL with onboard graphics. It will also have 8GB of DDR2 RAM and I was looking at either a Q6600 or Q6700 (possibly overclocking the CPU to 3.2GHz if possible).

Thanks for your help.

it should be fine ,but knowing the reputation of the hyper type R for going boom, i wouldnt use it on a machine that will cost that much money.

The PSU should be easily capable in terms of the power supplied. There have been a few noted instances of Hiper Type-Rs failing, sometimes catastrophically, but equally if it has lasted this long then I wouldn't have thought it all that likely to fail now. Also I think they might well have sorted their issues since there haven't been as many threads regarding failures but a reputation can be pretty hard to shift.

but a reputation can be pretty hard to shift.

words of wisdom. you even get philosiphic advice for free :)

anyway if you want a helpful tool try this

PS - not sure on your exact spec but it seems with so many hard drives/possible OC you are cutting it close. I would go for a bigger PSU to be sure, good deal on Corsair 650W this week Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU

PSS - i guess you are doing daisy chains all over the place - not very pretty in cable management ;). Makes me think that a case with room for two PSU might be an option in your case.
