I currently have a a hx620 and it has served me very well not missing a beat but it's not going to have enough grunt for the 6990 i just bought so am looking at options. I have checked on the amd site for certified psu's for this card and have shortlisted these

Corsair AX850/1200
Corsair HX1050
OCZ zx1000/1200
Silverstone Tech. SST-ST1000-P

I am looking for a quiet psu that does not whine and uses a larger quiet fan (why i am not interested in the antec hcp). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

OCZ Z series is good for the money.
Corsair AX1200 has horrendous cap whine issues, 750/850 not so much so I'd advise the AX850 over the 1200.
HX1050 is overpriced.
OCZ ZX series are pretty good though some have reported problems with coil whine, don't have that issue with mine or any of the ones I've used though so I can't personally confirm that.
Silverstone Strider can be pretty loud.
As stulid said, NZXT HALE or an alternative based on the same Superflower platform would be the best bet, very solid units and I haven't seen any coil whine issues.
Also consider the XFX Black Edition, Lepa G series or Antec High Current Gamer/Pro (apart from the 1200 due to the 80mm fan).

I think it's a toss up between the AX850 and the Hcp850. Need to read up a bit more on the nzxt hale units.
