Hi - I'm just curious as to your experience of PSUs failing.

If you've had a PSU go pop on you:

- Did it kill one or more of the other components?
- Did it kill the whole system?
- Did it cause no harm to the other components?

Would a moderator be able to make this in to a poll?

Well I had a Qtec and it didn't do anything interesting at all when it blew up! :( I was hoping for flames to come out of the computer or something, but instead there was a small pop, everything switched off, i replaced it with a new one and everything worked fine!

Ah well, maybe next time ;)
 
Recently had an Enermax 400W Liberty break - took out a hard drive but nothing else.

Also had lots of generic PSUs go pop without taking out any components and a Cheiftec 360W that also didnt take anything out.

What does doing a Qtec involve? Burning your face?
 
I had a generic one that died because the fan packed up, the system would randomly turn off when the pSU got too hot. The most recent one was a half decent one that would turn on for a few seconds then turn off, sometimes you could get the system to start after about 10 tries, not sure what the problem was but I replaced it.
 
Just a week ago today my Hiper 580W went back. Bit of smoke and burning but I was very lucky. Got a new Corsair 520W HX series and PC came back to life.

Phew! :o

well, thats not strictly true. i once used a PSU (not in a PC) to power a 12v DC motor, but the motor exceeded the current draw on the 12V rail (by about 15A!!!) and the PSU stopped working completely.
 
Not my PSU, but a warning to all.....

A friend who repairs PC's on the side fitted out a PC with a second hand generic/brown box PSU, 6 months or so later, it caught on fire and took the persons front room with it.

Last October my Hiper 580w Type R blew up (literally, Bloody great bang, sparks, flames and then smoke) and took out a brand new DFI motherboard. I took my revenge on it by chucking it out the upstairs window and then beat it to a pulp in the back garden with a dirty great sledgehammer much to the horror of my 80 year old neighbour. Yes it was still under warranty but i really did'nt want another one of those poor excuses for a psu. Besides, this made me feel slightly better.

The replacement for that, a Seasonic S12 650w Energy+, blew up six months later but just took itself out.

A month or so ago the Enermax Liberty 400w (different pc) that was only two weeks old blew up and tripped the main house breaker. That also just took itself out.

Only ever had 1 go pop on me (well, 2, but the 2nd was the replacememnt to the 1st...)

No other components damaged in any way, which was odd, considering the psu was a q-tec...
