ok guys ,bit of a noob question . at the moment i have agigabyte p35 motherboard with a q6600 overrclocked to 3.5ghz a 9800gtx+, 3 western digital blue 500gb drives and a dozen fans dvd drive etc all running on my 2 year old hyper type r 580 watt psu

my question is i have just bought a i7 920 and asus gene x58 , my psu only has a 4 pin atx and the board has an 8 pin atx connection . will it be ok . or do i need a new psu . it will be powering all the old parts but on new motherboard /cpu combo

I would definitely buy a new PSU, you dont want to put that one in and risk it blowing and taking all your nice new components with it
Hyper were never the best/most reliable anyway tbh
I'd look at a quality PSU such as Corsair, if you're running a single gfx card 550W should do, for potential dual gfx now or future id look at 750

Thanks i did think i would need a psu and a corsiar was what i was looking at .

Thing is my tsunami dream case is small and compact and i really like it . does anyone know if the Corsair HX 750W wil fit in this case ok or should i play safe and get the 650 watt version . will be buying a 5780 after xmas and another to crossfire soon after that .

I'd say go with the 750w version, if you're going to be running crossfire. Not sure if it'll fit in that case, sorry.

The 750w version is 30mm longer than the 650w one.

Thanks for the help guys , could any of you tell me the length of both the Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 750W and the Corsair HX 750W ? need to know , and cant seem to find the info anywere .
dont want to buy then it doesnt fit . want to order either one tommorow so need help fast

many thanks guys .
whent with the corsiar 750 . :-)
could anyone recomend me a good mini atx case for under 100 pound ?? love the tsunami . but its a bit big to move around .
thanks again . you were very helpfull

With processors running at stock speeds, only plugging in one of the 4 Pin EPS connectors is fine, it still supplies the needed voltage, however as soon as you talk about overclocking and really using the maximum power output of your power supply, you need a power supply with two of the EPS connectors, as motherboards prefer two lines, I can not give the technical reasons why, its due to the ampage I believe, however..yeah...definitely go for a Corsair, I just bought eh 850hxuk modular, absolutely fantastic buy! Sometimes better to get a bit more wattage, to allow for future upgrades and more demand from components in the future, plus Corsair has some ridiculous 7 year warranty or something, might aswell plan ahead! :-)

ok guys i got the corsiar hx 750 . a little disapionted with the cables , there horrible . fill cheap and not very flexible.
Anyway got the setup going nicly , asus rampage 2 gene ,920 cpu , 6 gb ocz obsidian , 2 640gb western digital blacks in raid .
need help overclocking the cpu . dont wanna go mad , it should do it on stock got a good heatsink Zalman CNPS9900 .
im just baffled by the bios features , dont know were to start . i could mess around with voltages and timmings etc all day long with my p45 and q600 . but this is just like wow . im stumped
