Hello,

Im running a:

2.2ghz Ahtlon X2 64
250gb SATA HD
1 DVD-RAM Drive
X1950 XT-X 512mb

I originally bought a Jeantech 500W PSU, but my machine kept switching itself of entirely every 30 mins of intense gaming. I looked into the details of the PSU and aparently its not actually 500W.

Can anyone suggest which PSU to get for this configuration? Im after something that will last but isnt rediculously expensive.

Cheers!!!

Corsair HX520 - simply brilliant.

If you cannot stretch that far then either OCZ Modstream 520W or the FSP Bluestorm 2 500W will get the job done.

I found the FSP on the Overclockers shop. This will definatly cope I assume?

Just seemed like my other power supply was cutting out because it didn't have enough juice. Either than or something on my motherboard was overheating :(.

Oh... I hate it when problems come up and your not sure what causes them :(.

Id check those case, cpu and gpu temperatures where possible as well. it could be an overheating problem which will only cost you £10 to solve and not £50+

CPU and GPU are relatively cold and no where near their limit of heat.

HOWEVER. My X1950 XT-X does cover 1/3 of my nForce4 heatsink on my motherboard. This chip DOES get hot. Problem is, theres nothing I can do cos I cant fit a fan on top because the card covers it. Also, I have to have a new power supply anyway as my old PSU didn't even have a 6pin PCI-E connector. Means I might need a new motherboard that the GPU doesn't cover any important bits, but i've got a silly uATX board.

GRRRR.

Ill see if this PSU helps first... if not... ill try a new motherboard too.....

Jesus PC's get expensive quick!

I tried putting a case fan next to the heatsink at the bottom of my case.. but it seems to just blow air at the graphics card, which is blowing air back at the fan... so the heat seems caught in the middle.

I've included a picture here: http://blakbox.co.uk/layout.jpg of the motherboard layout.

You can see my problem - although I dont know if that is the definate reason why my machine seemed to just kill itself. I feel it mighta been the power supply after reading the specs of the old Jeantech 500W I had. Also, my screen used to occasionally flicker between 3d and desktop which it didn't used to do before my new card. This is normally a sign of not enough power.

Stupid motherboard design!!!

It does do that.. it has a nice exhaust system... but the actual fan for creating turbulance is ust above the heatsink shown in the Diagram. It still pushes a little hot air over it. Not only that, the card itself covers 1/3 of the heatsink, meaning the heat can't escape from it.

(P.S. This is all speculation... I'll say it again... it might not be the nForce overheating causing a problem).

Cheers Guys... I´ve finally gone for the FSP Bluestorm 500W. Should arrive today hopefully.

Ill let you know how it gets on.

(May still be the nForce heat causing System Crash)

Thanks yálll

So far so good with the new PSU. Seems to have fixed my problem (so far - havnt done anything TOOO extensive with it yet).

So, moral of this storey. Stay clear of Jeantech 500W PSU. It doesn't cut the mustard!
