PSU issue I think.

Hello,
Last week I upgraded my graphics card from a Nvidia 660ti to a Radeon MSI 290x, a huge increase in power draw, tried it with my old TX 650 corsair and had my first ever instant shutdown of pc, so I looked around and did not have a huge amount of funds so I went with an EVGA 750 supernova the reviews seemed okay for it.

Both items bought from Overclockers

Any intensive game play and I still get an instant shutdown (not a graphics card crash or blue screen just instant no power) so I am assuming I need a better higher W psu.

A lot of the power calculators out there do not really cover what I have on my system some say a 650 is fine others go as high as 800w.

So here is my system, let me know if you think I am going the right way thinking of getting a seasonic or corsair 850.

Note** the only error report I get is after the shutdown asus volt protection kicks in telling my I have an unstable PSU.

i5 2500k intel cpu
Asus P8z77-V LX2
8gb DDR3
Seagate hybrid 1tb drive
Seagate 1.5 tb sata
MSI 290x twin fozzer 4gb
Custom liquid cooling system including
Laing DDC-1 12v
360cm Radiator
3 120cm Sharkoon fans (radiator)
1 120cm Sharkoon fan case
Scythe digital temp and fan speed read out
Internal Blu-ray drive
USB internal 3.0 card powered by psu
Logitech g600 mouse
USB keyboard
Logitech G13 gamepad
Razor megalodon headset (I know this has quite a draw)

I did a 24 hour prime95 test incase it was a cpu issue no problems and cpu never went above 32c

The signs do seem to point towards a psu issue and an OCCT psu direct x 11 test shut my pc down in 15 seconds.

Advice on psu is also appreciated.

Sounds like what issue i had when i upgraded to my 290x. Though technically it shouldnt use up that much power, it brought my quality 750 Fatal1ty unit to its knees and that had like 700-750 on the 12v rail. Inserting a less power hungry GPU or lowering the clocks stopped the issue, so i came to the conclusion it was the PSU. I replaced the PSU and i haven't had an unexpected shutdown since i did it at the beginning of January.

If the PSU purchase is fresh, could you return it for a different model?

I am sure there are many people doing fine with similar set ups on the same PSU but quality can vary even with the same model.

Would recommend a 650 Golden Green superflower for the job if, although it is non modular.

Could it be a thing of adjusting the power slider in CCC to +20%, I've seen this fix similar issues with cards acting like this?

750W should be fine for a 290X, surely?

His original 650W should have been more than enough and there is clearly something else wrong with the setup if he tried a new PSU with a higher wattage too and it's doing the same thing. Proving the original PSU is actually fine and some other fault is causing this.

Does the event log give any clues ?

Remove the Asus software that is detecting this, the software could be setup wrong or is faulty and test again to see if this happens. If it stops after removing this software try find an updated version and see if it is more stable if you like using it.

Is your CPU Overclocked also? If that is the case I would think that is your problem, it cant handle the OC and the 290x.

Under a heavy load with NO Overclock I would say your looking at a good 700watts, as a side note I do believe the 290x can use up to a eye watering 250-300watts if your really pushing it.

I would suggest a 1000watt, it is always nice to have the extra headroom, and even if you don't use all the power it will run quieter and cooler than a 850watt near peak.

No overclock on my cpu, the warning comes from the bios not windows software and my bios is fully updated, I have used the overdrive software in CCC to underclock my card my 20% which seems to have solved it till I can afford a new psu (my card was at factory setting not overclocked).

1kw for a single 290X is overkill, the 650w should be more than fine!

Looks like my system with the liquid cooling needs about 780w, if I reduce my card by 20% power/clock no shutdown no problems, take it back up to stock setting and it just peaks in heavy use games above what the EVGA psu can handle, so I am going to save up and grab an 850w.

The closer you get to the max of a PSU the more heat it generates, thus the faster the fan goes, also more heat means less PSU life with how capacitors age is smart imo. Plus the extra headroom for upgrades in the future.
