PSU issue

Hi all

What do you think of this as a valid test of the PSU - http://www.pcpower.com/support/ATX_troubleshoot.htm

My concern with my current PSU is its the power being supplied to the 24pin connector that is the issue.

So wouldn't this test just prove everything but that connection?

It would prove the psu unit is sending and receiving the start signal, do have a multimeter to test the voltages. Also what issues are you having to suspect a faulty psu.

No volt meter I'm afraid.

When powering up only the fans spin up nothing else. The CPU fan does nothing had this with my dads pc were no power to getting to the board, and it was the PSU

I jerry rigged my 24pin connection to my mates PC and then turned both PC's on and his CPU fans started to spin up, but not sure how accurate that test is though

Hey Hornett,
So you just get a 'blip' of power when you turn it on?
And you tried it with your mates PC and it did the same? or you tried your mates PSU with your PC?

It does sound like a PSU issue but possibly a short circuite.
Disassemble the PC give it a good clean,
Re-assemble with minimum hardware i.e. 1 stick of RAM and onboard graphics if you have that with your board.
Minimum peripherals, remove unecessary USB devices etc - make sure there are no loose screws touching the board and that its mounted correctly off the case.
Also check the PSU cable if you can from the mains - I've had issues with dodgy power cables being loose etc

Everything is hooked up as it was before, including the small one at the top left of the mobo

Basically when you turn it on, you just the whiring of all the fans, the PSU stays on but the CPU fans never spins up and you don't get the usual clicking from the drives you would expect when they are being read at boot.

I might have to bite the bullet and hook up my PSU but I just got all my cables tidy

Bought from here last year.

Just want to be sure its the PSU before I RMA it

The only way to be sure is to swap it out for a known working one, or check the voltages using a multimeter. The reason I say this is that if the problems still persists with a swapped out PSU, then it's most likely the motherboard is faulty, possibly the VRMs.

So the system boots up and stays on? Then your PSU could well be fine. Do you get anything on the monitor or does it stay off i.e. No Connection coming up on your screen.
Do you have the mobo speaker installed and do you get any POST(Power On Self Test) beeps?

I have THIS exact issue
Ocz 600 watt psu worked fine on quad core 8200 build
In my new 2500k sandy build , fan would spins but no post.

Put the ocz in buddys pc same thing...put it back in the quad core and it worked???

Ended up buying a new PSU.. I sure the thing could fixed but dont know where to start
