I installed a new gpu card (msigtx670 oc) bought from overclockers in an offer about a month ago, I don't know if this instal is linked but since install i have blown 2 700w psu s. the first was of unknown brand and had been in my tower for 2 yrs with no problems. The second was installed to replace the defunct unit by a local pc shop. They fitted an evo labs pentium p4 model e 700br. PC booted fine, but as soon as I tried to run saints row 4 the new psu suddenly sparked and turned the PC off. Am I having these probs due to my msi card or is it me just being unlucky with my psu.?

Both PSU's are bad. They probably don't actually output the amount of power they say it does.

they are shoving cheap psu's into your machine

whats your pc? a Pentium 4?

stick a decent brand in yourself, its just a matter of plugging in wires

xfx/corsair/seasonic are the brands you want

What is the rest of your pc spec, you really need a quality psu like something from corsair or seasonic.

Your lucky the psu didn't take out the other components too.

Hard to get my specs as the PC is off lol! As far as I can remember they are
I5 2500k oc to 4.6, asus p8 z68 v gen 3 mobo, 12gb of Kingston hyperx ram at 1600mhz, msi gtx670 oc, 1tb hard drive (unknown type), 500gb hard drive (unknown type), DVD drive, 2 12cm fans. Hope that helps. I know it always says here not to scrimp on psu, but can anyone spec me one that won't cost the earth? Saw that oc have a 700w for 59.99, it any good?

This will be fine, the 700w you had probably didn't output the amount it said, however, if you want to be safe with the OC you have, buy a 700w. Make sure it is from a good quality brand like Corsair, Xigmatek, Enermax, Seasonic etc...

So, to go back, if the psu blew when I was running a game or heaven then it is def the psu? All was fine browsing online and general desktop use, but as soon as I tried the games it went. So the psu cold not handle the load and went boom! Just want it straight so I can go in the shop tomorrow and tell them.

yes it went cos its cheap ****

hence spending more on a good one and spend once

order one and install it yourself, when you take out your old psu, you'll see where all the plugs and wires go

Problem I have with self install is that in my tax case the psu is at the top with the large CPU cooler below and slightly to the right. To get the psu out I would have to remove this cooler first as there is no room to unscrew the psu and get the block out. I have never take the CPU cooler off myself and so am nervous of doing this. Would I have trouble refitting it?

If you have to remove the CPU cooler you will need some new thermal paste before refitting. Where are you based, if local to me I don't mind helping out.

what cooler do you own? all that holds them on usually is four screw bolts

you would be better to wipe off any old thermal paste with kitchen towel and re apply some, just a tiny pea sized blob then re mount the heatsink and screw it down in a criss cross method

CPU cooler is a corsair a50 so it is quite tall. Just been measuring size of power block and it is 8cm depth, so to remove it without taking out cooler gives me barely any room. Like I said I have never removed the cooler myself. Thanks for the offer of help nutsnut, but I am in South Wales in the Rhondda valley so am quite far away!

if you *really* can't/don't want to take the cpu cooler off, then just hacksaw that top crossbar off, unless the psu is actually seated on it, which even if it is, as long as there is support on the opposite side you could get way with removing it still.

Looks like it would come out without removing the CPU HS to me. Some cases allow you to pull the mounting plate out also.

Take a picture of the rear of the tower unit.
