PSU noise, video within.

One question though - would the glue act as a heat insulator, and if it did, is that a problem?

You only glue the coils that have the problem. It physically stops them vibrating by damping down the vibration. Heat shouldn't be an issue, as you're only using a small amount of glue on the key components. You don't just put a load of glue everywhere! ;)

Just be careful if you've got a PSU opened and under load to identify the problem coil, you really could kill yourself if you're not sure what you're doing. You could just glue all of them to be on the safe side. It's a transformer or inductor you're likely looking for.

Don't PSUs hold a deadly charge even after being disconnected? It just sounds like a risky thing to do if you don't know what you are doing.

Yes. You have to know how to safely discharge them. That's why they have big stickers on the side telling you not to open them.

It's easy to open them up and poke around, but being unaware of safety procedures, you could end up in hospital or even dead. I don't recommend anyone with "a little bit of knowledge" to open a PSU up and put themselves at risk.

Also, is XFX lesser quality for PSUs than other brands, or have i just been unlucky?

I had one and it started playing up, but I did have this rig running on it using at least 450w at full load, the PSU was a 550w rated version so you know.

I believe that Seasonic make them, at least for my Core Edition they did and for the RMA you have to return it to the retailer instead of straight back to the manufacturer.

i started having problems with the pc shutting down under load, so bought a new psu and problem solved. it seems that my PSU's symptoms were more than just noise.

thanks for the tips though!
