Hey guys

I've currently got a 939 system and am looking to goto C2D.

Anyway I was wondering if my current PSU a globalwin 520w will fit the current crop of 775 motherboards? I read somewhere that a new format might have been used for certain PSU's and motherboards if that makes sense so I want to ensure that this either is or isnt the case?!

Hope thats all made sense ;)

but would my PSU physically fit onto the motherboard wiring plug wise?!?

Also I'm going to be getting SATA drives, anything different regarding the power side of things on these drives or are they basically the same setup as IDE drives?

Sorry forgot to answer that question, getting tired you see lol.
Yeah should be no problem, your PSU has a 24/20pin connector right, if so no problem at all.

Newer PSUs will do, such as the Corsair. They will come with several cables, so if you wanted to use your IDE drive you will still be able to use it. One thing though newer motherboards only seem to come with one IDE socket.

Power Supply's do.

The thing is I brought this power supply from the MM and it literally came as just the PSU so where do I stand on this?

Can I do anything with this PSU to run SATA drives or is it a case of buying a new one or sticking with IDE?

Dosent your PSU have any of these connectors on? http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/data/articles/2004/1192/tutorial-sata_power_conn.jpg

If it dosent you can buy something like this:

Though i would advise if your upgrading buy the new SATA Hard drives.

Hey mate

Nah its just got those white common power connectors on it. I think personally this PSU is circa before SATA became more mainstream!

Right I'm off to buy my new PC then ;)

Are you going to build it yourself, overclocking that sort of stuff?

well I'll give you the specs of the current build I'm going for

-ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA PT880 Ultra Socket 775 SATA 8 channel audio ATX
-Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86ghz) Socket 775 Fsb1066 2mb Cache Retail
-Asus TA-210 Mid Tower Case Black/Silver with 360W PSU
-Seagate ST3250820AS 250GB 7200RPM SATA300 8MB Cache
-HP DVD940i 18x SuperMulti DVD±RW/RAM Lightscribe Black Retail Box
-6 Lp4 Male To Serial Ata - Power Adapter Uk

I'm basically getting C2D on the cheap, but the mobo has had rave reviews (allows AGP and PCI-Xpress, as well as using DDR1 or DDR2 memory) and the processor is good for a little overclocking at least should I want to do that in the future.

So I will canabalise my current rig for the other items and off I go!

Whats your budget by the way?

Well its having to be done cheap as I have just brought my first house and its going to cost me a small fortune to furnish, etc, etc.

So I'm taking the family PC back to standard and building my own computer hence the small upgrade and mix of old and new tech.

Budget really is only about £300 max!

Personally that motherboard along with the E6300 wont clock far.

Depending on the stuff you do on your pc, i would suggest just upgrading to this:

Maybe when you have a higher budget go for a C2D system.

Hey mate

The problem is that the computer im currently using has to stay at home as its the home PC, so all I'm doing is downgrading it and using some of the parts in my new build!

Well I've already ordered it lol! Basically its cost me £250

Heres the final spec I chose...

ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA PT880 Ultra Socket 775 SATA 8 channel audio ATX
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86ghz) Socket 775 Fsb1066 2mb Cache Retail Boxed Processor
Asus TA-210 Mid Tower Case Black/Silver with 360W PSU
Seagate ST3250820AS 250GB 7200RPM SATA300 8MB Cache - OEM
HP DVD940i 18x SuperMulti DVD±RW/RAM Lightscribe Black Retail Box
6 Lp4 Male To Serial Ata - Power Adapter Uk
Arctic Cooling (AC-FRZ-7P) Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 CPU Cooler

Total: £252.86

For a new computer which is only missing memory and graphics I think thats a true steal!
