PSU or something else?

Hi All,

I'm stumped with a problem on my PC and would greatly appreciate any help.

Three times in the last week, the PC has shut itself down while unattended and idle and refused to power up for a good few minutes.

After the last occasion, I was scouring the web for answers and my display went into 'no-signal' mode. The fans were still going and all the lights on my motherboard and RAM were still lit, but I couldn't even use Splashtop to get onto it, so it was definitely 'dead'. I waited 15 minutes or so to see if it would shut down completely like before, but it did not.

There have been no new components in the PC since before Christmas. My CPU, motherboard, memory and graphics card are all under warranty, but I have no idea which (if any) of them could be the issue. Obviously the PSU is a potential culprit, but I cannot afford to replace it if that's not the problem. I don't think overheating is the issue, as it has always been sitting idle on the windows desktop when it has gone - never while gaming or doing anything else intensive.

Specs:
XFX 850w Black Edition Modular Power Supply
Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Running at stock)
Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 Motherboard
Avexir Core Blue Series 8GB RAM
Sapphire Radeon R9 290X

Any advice as to how to proceed would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

DF

Hi - thanks for the reply!

The answer to both of these questions was no, but after reading this I disabled the C State and updated the BIOS...and while typing out a response, the PC powered down again, and as I type now (on a laptop) it still won't power up. If it follows the pattern, I will be able to power up again in a few minutes.

It's almost like something is being tripped in the PSU and needs time to reset. Is this something that can happen?

Sounds like one possibility. May I ask - did you disable C State again after updating the BIOS?

I must be tired! Of course, you're right - I forgot to re-disable C states after flashing.

I'll see how it goes tomorrow night now that it's disabled again. Cheers.

PSU cage depth 180mm, max PSU depth 160mm

If you check the specs of a PSU you have in mind just aim for it to be 160mm or under.

I went for the Corsair 500w CX (150mm(W) x 86mm(H) x 140mm(L)) and had more than enough room to tuck cables in behind it.
