Hi

Can anyone confirm my PSU is dying. I have recently had serious troubles booting up the following system.

Gigabyte P35
E2810
Hyper PSU
2*OCZ 2GB
8800GT
2* Hard Drives

Initially I got no beeps but all fans spinning and then cutting out.
I then unplugged one HD and got beeps but it then failed during the Windows XP loading screen.
I have now removed one stick of memory and after a few goes it boots up fine.

Does this suggest the PSU is on it's last legs. There are no noises coming from it but it is almost 4 years old.

Cheers

Has it been running the system fine until recently then ? Have you changed or added any hardware ? Yes I see that you removed a stick but I mean before that.
I have a Gigabyte P35 DQ6 & the Memory slots are temperemental ******** I found this out myself by Blasting through a problamatic build until I finally had it how I wanted, Of course once I screwed my head round 20 times & sorted it I Googled & found out that Lots of P35's suffer from Dodgey Mem slots :p
Anyway My Questions ???

Thanks for your reply Malc

Yes, it has been running fine for years until I started having these boot problems yesterday. No hardware changed or added. It isn't even overclocked.

Scarey thing with PSU's is if they do go they can take other components out with them, How are you off for money ? Have you a friend local who can lend a PSU to you for a test night/run/session ?

Initially I would run a Spyware/Adware scan though & see if yuo haven't picked summit up that's causing the issues.
I would also run memtest & see if you haven't burnt a stick out, Are you clocking ? If so how heavily ?
Anybody else used the system ? You 100% sure about this.

Moneywise, getting a new PSU is not a problem. There is one on special this week that should fit the bill.

Unfortunately nobody local to borrow and test.

I will run sup spypot and see what happens.

I am not clocking and have run memtest.

The fact that I get incremental progress by removing the second HD and then memory sugessts perhaps the PSU just can't muster the power. Then again, I have no idea what I am talking about, although it seems logical.

I am not overclcoking.

It does sound logical but P35's are not logical that is why they were updated so quickly. I Love my Mobo it's Gorgeous but just like Good looking women it is one temperamental bitch.
I can follow the manual & set mine up to the letter, It will start then cut out & then be as dead as a dodo.
Build it my way & it not only runs faultlessly it clocks like **** & runs like a fridge on air  Basically read the Manual backwards & then shred it & maybe you'll be close. :p:p:p
I do like my Tweaking & enjoy a challenge like a decent game of chess but this build really pushed me. Give me wood once done though. :o + :p

Think yours may be different though as it has been running so sweet for so long, The only thing I'd blame yours on now apart from a failing PSU is Spyware/Adware crap.

Always worth trying All options though before you get your wad out.
