Hey all

just a small question, when ever i boot up my computer the psu will power up for a few seconds then power off, then it will power up again and boot the computer.
Just wondering if this is normal as i've never encountered this before on any computer.

The PSU is a 500w Earthwatts one which comes as standard with the Antec sonata 3 case/

cheers

Perfectly normal. It wakes up and then realises the motherboard is still asleep so does a snooze, but then the motherboard wakes up so it has to get up anyway...

Bit like what my kids do to me....

Shouldn't do, it sounds like there is some sort of a problem. You might want to try building outside the case just to check if there is possibly some intermittant short happening.

Hmm two completly different answers, i'm hoping the 1st is correct tho :)

anyone else care to add there advice, just to add its the same on every boot, powers up and off for the same amount of time, then powers up again.
It never fails to boot the computer, just has this rather weird routine.

ideas?

I had something similar, pressed on button once then it powered up for a sec, then off, pressed it again and it would boot up fine.

Eventually it would boot up at all, hopefully you have a different problem tho.

Thought it was psu prob at first then tried it on a diff mobo and it worked fine. Have just sent of my new mobo bac for testing.

what is your motherboard?.....P965 chipset by any chance?
do you turn the power off at the wall? if yes.....thats why.
its just checking the bios settings ;):D

Yep this is a mobo issue and not a PSU problem. I have had a few do this but not really worried as apart from the startup issue they have worked fine and been 100% stable.

Hey thx for all the replys, the motherboard is a Abit IP35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard i've only had it a few days at most.

since my last post i've been reading a few threads and searching the web, someone mentioned it here. if i turn the mains off, the computer will do this startup procedure with the psu. If i then run the computer and shut it down but leave the mains on, then the next time i boot the computer it will just boot straight up without the psu bit. I'm guessing this is the reason here, never thought about it being the mains, usually just switch all plugs off to save money (student :P ) and only boot the computer once a day in the morning.

i hope this is the issue anyways

any more replys are much appreciated

thx in advance

When you turn the PC back on at the mains wait a little longer before powering up. I have something similar except mine wont turn on for about 10-20 secs after being plugged into the mains (even tho the mobo light is on).
I can only assume the PSU is 'reading up', maybe filling capacitors up?
