PSU Question

Hey Guys and Gals,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out here, im doing quite a big upgrade to my machine and i have a PSU question.

First im buying these parts:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB)
  • EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
  • EVGA nForce 780i SLI *** nForce 780i (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • GeIL 4GB (4x1GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

I notticed the in comments for the EVGA nForce 780i SLI *** that i need 24 pin and a 8 pin connector and at present i have a Hiper 580 Type R PSU with the detachable connectors and it only has 6 pins, is it possible to buy the connectors serperatly? or am i better off just upgrading my PSU aswell?
 
First off, get rid of the Hiper before it blows up. Do a search and you will see what i mean. A Corsair, Zalman, Enermax, Seasonic 600w will do the job. You could get away with a Corsair HX520 actually.

You would be better off with 2x2Gb sticks of ram. I would'nt buy a 8800GTX either. I presume you are going Sli at some point judging by the board and card choice. If so a GTX 260 would be a more sensible choice. An up to date card and faster than the 8800GTX and only a few quid more expensive too.

If you are not going to go Sli then get a Asus P5Q Pro and a ATI 4870 instead.
 
Yikes! That's quite scary about the Hiper's.

Hmmm iv always been using NVIDIA but i guess i could move over to ATI and try it out.

Thinking about SLI it would probably quite some time before i "need" to get that as i dont play games like Crysis ect just MMO's and some FPS's ect so by the time that happens everything would be out of date again.

Ok so far i think this looks ok:

  • Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
  • Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI
  • Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB)

I almost went for a Tagan PSU but there is probably a reason why you did not list that.

That's a cracking spec. You certainly will not be regretting that. The Nvidia chipset motherboards are not very good these days. Buggy as hell and only really useful if someone was to insist on Sli. The ATI 4870 is miles faster than the 8800GTX and is probably the best card at the moment for price and performance. Nothing against Tagan but the Corsairs are argueably one of the best psu's on the market at the moment. Personally i think my Zalman is but that's just me. :D

If you are going to clock that E8400 (should hit 3.8-4Ghz) you will need a decent cooler if you have'nt already got one. Apart from that, enjoy. :)


***Edit*** Just noticed the Gskil PC2 8500 4Gb kit is back in stock. That is cracking ram and i would take that over the Geil anyday. It's £6 cheaper too.

I'm looking at coolers at the moment actually lol, just trying to get a horizontal CPU cooler that wont hit any of the heatsinks

Better to go with a vertical one that directs the exhaust to the rear case fan. The Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro is very good (and cheap).
 
My case has a pipe going from the side case fan to the CPU fan pulling air from it but i sapose i could take that off and change my air flow around.
 
A plastic tunnel you mean? Thats really only for the stock cooler anyway. You won't be needing that. I have never used one myself. Got loads sitting around the house though. :D
 
lol yeah thats the one, ah well it went from PSU problem to a whole overhall, you have been a great help pasty cheers.
