If a psu is rated at 1000w does it draw 1000 watts all the time when on, or only draws what it needs upto a maximum of 1000watts

If that don't make sense just let me know

ye the old PCs used to do that, nowadays they only draw certain ammounts of power depending on what is needed, 1000watts is the max it will produce.

What on earth do you need a 1kW PSU for?

Or was it just hypothetical?

just typing 1000 seemed easier than 650 at the time lol

altho i did see a video of a guy installing a 1600watt power supply to his (i've got more money than sense build.. Shame i can't link the video
but it had i7 975,1600watt psu 2x ati 5970's,12gb ram, extreme 3 mobo,a coolermaster v10 plus a whole load of extra stuff he wasted god knows how much on.

You see a lot of people using 1000w PSU's, espically these days with all these dream PC's being built. Obviously the more powerful hardware you use the more wattage it is going to use to power them.

For example Watercooling/TEC's and high end Graphics Cards which are in SLI/Crossfire will need a 1kw PSU...

it wasnt mine was it lol

I can't stand it when people buy 1K+W PSU's just for single graphics cards just to "future-proof". Wattage is really underestimated these days.
