Looking to connect 16 western digital drives in a raid5 array. They are the 1TB WD RE2-GP drives (WD1000FYPS).
The following numbers are from their web site.
So for worst case the 12v line needs...
16 * 340 = 5440 mA = 5.44 Amps on the 12 volt rail
and for worst case the 5volt line needs...
16 * 675 = 10800 mA = 10.8 Amps on the 5 volt rail
Now, I have all these drives connected to a hiper-r 580w (dont laugh), spread over 3 of the outputs. The psu wont turn on, it just turns off instantly. If I put 8 drives onto another psu, then the hiper-r runs fine.
The rails on the hiper-r are as follows....
32A @ 3.3v
36A @ 5v
20A @ 12v1
18A @ 12v2
0.8A @ -12v
2.5A @ 5vsb
Any idea why the thing cant power the 16 drives?
Cheers.
The following numbers are from their web site.
Code:
Current Requirements
12 VDC
Read/Write 340 mA
Idle 254 mA
Standby 6 mA
Sleep 6 mA
5 VDC
Read/Write 675 mA
Idle 195 mA
Standby 180 mA
Sleep 180 mA
Power Dissipation
Read/Write 7.4 Watts
Idle 4.0 Watts
Standby 0.97 Watts
Sleep 0.97 Watts
