Hi guys,

I've just set out my upgrade, and I want to make sure the PSU is ok for it.

I've currently got 4 hard drives (1 IDE 3 SATA), a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS platinum pro (the one with the breakout box) and a couple of optical drives.

I'll be replacing everything else with:
  • AMD X2 5000+ (AM2)
  • ASUS M2N-E Motherboard
  • 2gb matched Crucial Ballistix DDR2 kit
  • Geforce 7950 GX2

I'm just wondering if a 500 watt Tagen PSU would be suitable for all that? Getting the next one up will put me over my £1000 budget. And I've still got to get it shipped out here from my brothers place in the UK after that. The 7950 GX2 is the main concern power wise.

Ids at least get a 600w+ if you’re planning to upgrade to pcie etc / sli in the near future

I have a Silverstone 750w , runs like a dream :D

A Tagan 500w might just about be enough, depending on it's age, but I'd say that you would probably be running near to it's limits so for peace of mind I'd say get a more powerful PSU.

One question though why the X2 5000? A Conroe 6300 is cheaper and performs nearly as well at stock I believe plus can usually be overclocked far futher :)

GX2's dont actually use all that much power, a lot less than ATI stuff. GX2's only have 1 power connector, as the card with the PCI connector on actually draws its power down from the PCI express slot, as the slots only rated at 75W, its pretty safe to assume the max power of a GX2 probably under 150W.

Nvidia did a good job getting power requirements down on that card.

yup but he has 4 hard drives and a few optical drives. Plus if he wants to overclock better to have a surplus of power then to be lacking in power
