PSU system damage?

If you upgrade some of your hardware and the PSU can no longer supply adequate power can it damage/destroy some components or will it just make the system unstable.

or both?

It will make things unstable until it blows. Then it can take things with it.

I would only try it once so if it did go unstable I wouldn't use it again till had purchased a better psu.
