PSU War...

Recently i bought a 580w power supply for my upgraded computer

(amd athlon x2 @ 3.05ghz,
2 x 9600Gt's in SLI,
4Gb Ram 800mhz,
2 x HDD's,
Cathodes,
Fans,
Dvd-Rw,
Etc.)

Anywho, before the upgrade i had a little 400watt but even now my voltage drops below 12 volt when i have everything running, and just to confirm my psu isnt doing the job, the voltage rises from 11.84 (lowest voltage it goes down to) as you disable more fans/cathods/gpu's)

i also did a calculator thingy and it told me i needed 683w of power, can anyone recommend me a psu thats suitable?

im on a budget here and would like a modular psu preferably and have about £60 to spend.

sorry for the tight budget, trying to move out too lol.

Thanks.

nice one, modular too! nice work :P

very tempted to get that, best ive seen for the price so far,
its a little out of my budget but i can sell my old psu to make up for it :)

You're gonna have a hard time finding any 700+ watt PSU for under 60 unless you want to resort to no-name supplies, but I would advise staying away from those as the PSU is one of the only components that can completely **** you over if they fail.

indeed, later this year i plan on getting the new six core i7 thats coming out (hopefully) and maybe 3 gpu's (havent decided whether to go with nvidia or ati),
12/16Gb ram,
and an SSD drive of some sort,
Water cooling too.

But thats along way away, looking forward to building it tho :D

indeed, not sure whether to keep my current pc or sell it,

ive had it ever since it was a little single core with 32mb internal grahics,

the memories ....

Heh, the first system I can remember using had something around 500 MHz, the first PC I could call my own had 1 GHz (been using that until about 3 months ago)

which power 580w power supply did the op buy just out of curiosity, needing a 700w psu for that system seems odd as the oc'd system in my sig runs off of a 700w psu and i'm not utilising most of that lol

How many cpu's did you put in when calculating the power supply.

I have calculated 353w ~ so any 520w ~ will be fine.

My i7 setup with 2 5850 pulls around 480w.

fixed :D

the only reason i can think of for that 580 not being enough is that it cost like £20 and being one of those discount brands

Well, the OP was complaining about his voltages dropping due to excess load, maybe he just has a bad PSU though.

But with fermi coming out, you can't really go wrong with a strong power supply. I read somewhere that engineering samples draw 280W.

How are you measuring the voltages? If its through software, ignore.

What PSU did you buy?

The voltage range allowed by ATX is thus:
+12VDC tolerance: ±5% Min: +11.40 Nom:+12.00 Max:+12.60 Volts

So its still well within specs. Have you been experiencing an unstable system? Crashes? Overheating?

If no to all of the above, save your cash as you will need to upgrade when you get your other PC anyway!
