hi, need a new psu, will need to run the following setup
ip35 mobo
dual core cpu
2gig mem
4-6 hdd
3870xt

possibility of adding another graphics card although i need to budget atm so a cheaper psu would be prefered. looked @ Corsair VX 450W ATX PSU (CMPSU-450VXUK)

and was hoping something around this price range. thanks

I've just bought one of those, and while it is decent enough build quality, I have noticed a few things.

1. It isn't modular, and hiding the spare cables is annoying.
2. There is a slight wine noise which I believe is coming from it. I might be imagining it (and there are 3 other fans, 2 x 120mm and 92mm, that could be responsible), but I thought I'd mention it.

edit: Corsair (generally), Seasonic, Enermax, Antec are all good PSUs

would that cpu be powerful enough?

in all my builds i usually went with cheapest psu i could find but want a silent one and know power consumption is an issue with some builds.

The Corsair VX 450W only has 1 PCI-E connector + don't know how the single +12V Rail will cope

IMO you should invest in a more powerful PSU & don't skimp. Most here will agree that PSU purchase should be treated importantly just like CPU & or GFX. Its what will power your £xxx components & can even outlive them, i.e. last several upgrades.

Recommend the Corsair HX 520W ;)

I'd agree that the Corsair HX 520w is a great PSU but a minor point, it is also a single rail PSU in fact, regardless of how it is labelled there is only really one rail, JonnyGuru's review explains it quite well.

Given the price difference between the 520w and 620w at the moment it might be worth even just going for the 620w since it is less than £5 between them when I last looked.

does the 620 have multi rails.

Nope, it is a single rail PSU as well but a very powerful one. It will be more than fine for almost any system you could care to put it to, it has been demonstrated with watercooled, overclocked quad-core and SLi'd 8800 series cards so multiple rails are hardly a requirement for a good system.

ok my question is do i need 620 or would a 450 be ok especially if only using 1 gpu. because that will be moved into a new pc when i have dosh to buy a 2nd. thanks

Possibly a bit late with the reply but the 450w ought to power what you have there fine (the 38XX series are quite power efficient which is a chnage from the past couple of generations of ATI cards) although as melbourne720 has said it might not be the quietest. :)
