i was sure there used to be a psu section but i cant find it. anyways. can someone recomend a good cheap psu to buy. i will use a 4870 hd card. is there anything that will excede 600w? what else must i look for? thanks

im thinking of a AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz cpu. the particular graphics card is the XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5. further than that i havnent decided. and as cheap as possible. i dont have a set limit as i dont know what a reasonalble price is. but not overly expensive. just a good cpu that will suport those parts. maybe about £70 but ive no idea realy

Depending on the rest of your spec a 600W should be absolutely fine. However, running a 'cheap' PSU with equipment like a 4870 is not a good idea imo. The 4870 requires 2 x 6pin PCIe power connections so obviously your PSU must have these as a minimum. The recommendations here will be for quality PSU's by the likes of Corsair and BeQuiet! to name just two. They are both great makes.

edit: Blimey, everyone posted at the same time there! Go for the 550W Corsair that reflux posted.

VX450 or HX450 should give more then enough power assuming no major upgrades are planned in the lifetime of this PSU

my q6600B3, overclocked and 4870 1GB uses about 300W*, accounting for effeciency,

*measured from a power meter thingy that plugs into the mains

Yeah but would you want your PSU to be running at 100% load all the time? Better to get more than you need and have plenty of reserve.

so the cossair looks like the way to go. thanks. i dont know how i mangaed it but i managed to cut the wires in my old psu! tey got trapped between the case side and body and got destroyed somehow. last time i let my dad put my pc back together.
