I have PTM 7950 left over from a few years ago, was kept in sealed bad and inside a box. I want to use it on a Thin Client and probably my K7 Plus Mini PC as well. I did some googling and apparently the shelf life is 12 months? Is this th case or what? How do you know if it's no longer good to use?

Open it and check to see if it's all one mix. If it is it's good to go. I've used TIM that was 8 years old stored at room temp. Had to squeeze a bunch out and mix the oil-ish back into gray-ish (with toothpick). Then it worked fine for 3 years for sure when I sold that system. Never heard any complaints from buyer. :)

Does this pad actually last forever? Iv reading reports that it's stable for a couple of years but then people get issues with rising temps.

Did they buy fakes?
Officially ptm7950 is rated for >1000 cycles from -40 to +200c
Obvs not going to get this kind of temperature swings on a pc, so I would expect at least 2000-3000 cycles

I applied it yesterday morning and at best it's probably gone down by 1 or 2 degrees. Should I wait a few more days?

I also found my old Arctic max 4 paste from maybe 8 years ago. Doesn't look like it's dried up. Should I bin that?

Maybe you're over thinking this a bit... use what you have, if temps are bad, get a tube of MX-7 or similar, 8 grams for 6 quid, you should get a few applications out of that. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/arct...rmance-thermal-compound-8g/COO-ARC-07553.html

You say its gone down a couple of degrees.. from what, is it overheating? teh difference between the best thermal compounds and average ones, is only about 1 or 2 degrees anyway.

Well it's a HP T540 thin client running 24/7 with 1 VM. It was 51° and now it's 49 or 50°. Is the MX7 better than Grizzly Duronaut which apparently is the very best.

And are you supposed to use pea drop or spread it with a tool?

Don't think it actually matters. As long as you use enough paste and the mounting pressure is correct, pea in the middle, small x shape or spread out should all work the same.
