Public announcements of secret weapons

I thought EM Railguns was hardly a brand new idea in warfare, the only problem with the weapons being their huge weight, and the fact that the weapon is fragile considering the huge strain the projectile causes when fired (I believe modern railguns need a service after every single shot - I don't see battleships going into battle with a single shot weapon, no matter how powerful :p) rendering them impractical for battlefield use...

Why should weapons be secret?
1. They're paid for with public money so 'we' should see what we've purchased
2. They act as deterrents
3. why not?

if we knew about these weapons, we would want them, and where there is demand there is in one way or another supply, and in result you get a 3 tooth american wielding one at a school because its his right.

Still though, they shouldnt be telling the public about new technology (weapon based) should they??

Railguns have existed for over a decade. It's common knoweldge they were being developed for military purposes. It's possible to build small scale ones at home.

Utterly pointless in the end though, they will never be used against anyone. Such an horrendus waste of money.

Why not? From what you saw on that video clip, could you design your own railgun? If your answer is anything other than 'I already have one for home security', then I for one am not too worried ;)

So, how many '3 tooth american' have you seen with:
1. A tomahawk missile
2. A MOAB
3. the pain gun

a shotgun is far different to a missile. a shotgun is classed as a civilian worth weapon. this is a shotgun therefore there is a good possibility of it getting out regardless of it being automatic. I dont know what guns they are allowed to own in america. I do know a shotgun is one of them.

Railguns will replace most artillery imo. Eventully they will be powerfull enough that you will just build railgun stations in your home country, that have the power to fire a shot with such an arc that it can reach its destination anywhere in the world. Might have a long flight time though so shorter range battlefield artillery will still be needed.

Personly i like a gause gun better, since ive seen one of them in action when a kid at my built one, great fun:)

on the topic about weapons being kept secret or not, the only reason to keep something secret is if the enemy doesnt know its comming and so itll be a supprise. If everyone already knows your working on something, the benifits of it being kept secret drop dramaticaly.

What you have to wonder is what they aren't talking about in public. What sort of advanced technology do they have hidden away in those bases that don't exist? Don't forget, the F-117 was originally penned in '73 and first flew in '79!

Very much true.

Also don't underestimate the potential image boost for the US military. Technologically advanced stuff like this intimidates enemies, impresses the public, etc. I doubt that camera crew were uninvited.

Shame there are so many obstacles in the way of getting relativistic speeds out of the rail gun. I couldn't resist this though (shamelessly stolen)
