Public Sector

I'd rather work in the public sector than than the private one again. Granted, the majority of my experience of the private sector was in retail (an industry that places zero value on the people who work in it) but I'd never feel satisfied working for the sake of someone else's profit.

I don't know your friends but the amount councils have been told to cut has left a lot of people under a ****load of pressure.

That is pressure that applies to every job. For generations it hasn't to the public sector so again an example of the differences they have been use to. Lots of businesses get rid of staff, jobs for life are a thing of the past for most these days. Of course the threat of job loss is stressful.

I work in LA, its a nightmare when you have lazy people in your dept, it is massively frustrating as management don't seem to sort it out.
I have had to make my peace with this frustration or have a breakdown, maybe i`m being assimilated.

I don't think the OP is talking about the armed forces either... though regular naffi breaks, and afternoon for sports and knocking off early on a Friday can't be too bad...

methinks he means local council workers and civil servants in govt departments... not doctors, nurses, police officers, soldiers etc...

Your cutting out a pretty large % in that case - don't forget teachers.
People can be fickle.

I think the problem with Public Sector is generally the pay.

It's significantly less than in the Private and isn't even increasing at the same rate. (1% year on year).

This means anyone wanting more money has to move to private to get it.

Issues the public sector has is bad apples are hard to throw out and there isn't a good structure in palce to reward those that go above and beyond so there is no incentive to try harder, merely do what is sufficient. In the Private sector you may be contracted for 40 hours but you know that is bull and you will have to throw your weight around sometimes, a good employer will reward those that do the dirty work and long hours.

This is offset by the benifits though, like the market leading pension and retirement options. Plus the fact you don't have to work very hard.

you have differing bands/levels though don't you?

Its hard to jump up multiple levels though. In the private sector a new hire that turns out to be a tremendous help to the company could get a 50% pay rise, in the public sector they might bump you a level and you get a 2% rise instead of 1%.

I have a firmed that works for state transportation, recently he worked his butt of to rescue a project, did insane hours, completely turned around a failing contact which saved tends of millions of dollars, was recognized at the highest level for doing a stunning job far beyond expected, personal thanks form the boss of the boss of the boss etc. etc. He gets a 3% pay rise and Christmas hamper this year, plus a n award to stick on the office door. Int he private sector he could have got a 100K kick back form rescuing a multi-million dollar project and a 30% pay rise for being awesome.

Automatic progression through the steps within your band was stopped I think? Back when I was in the NHS you got a incriment increase every year just for turning up, as well as whatever cost of living increase your union Rep was able to blag for you.

I had a stint in local government and some old guy I sat opposite every single day after lunch would fall asleep at his desk. This went on for a couple of years, his manager was made aware of this but she was too busy being friends with her staff rather than being an actual manager. And they wondered why there was a backlog of work. Fast forward to when he was made redundant at the age of 55, he got his pension paid and without reduction, when he should have been given the sack.

He literally did nothing and always avoided the work. The funny times were when other staff would be calling his number from their mobiles but withholding their numbers so he couldn't find out who it was. What a joke that office was.

Lol the pay gap is nothing like 'significant' it has massively closed in recent times and this idea that pay rises are easy to come buy in the private sector is also nonsense loads of companies don't offer cost of living increases and it is a bun fight to get 1-2% rises on the back of decent performance. Oh and you've forgotten the pension scheme that is worth thousands a year as you won't get close in the private sector!

I lasted 9montgs working for the nhs and the low performance culture, waste and general attitude forced me to run for the hills!

This is one of the things junior doctors are striking about...
